Can any of the brethren tell me if military lodges operate in the US, we have a tradition of having some lodges with entrance restricted to serving and retired members of regiments and other service affiliations? I am aware that masonry was originally taken to our late colonies in the Americas by Military Lodges in the 18th century but wonder if any still exist on a restricted entry basis.

Major General Henry Knox Lodge in Boston, Massachusetts, is restricted to current and honorably discharged members of the United States Armed Forces.

Interesting discusssion! I am working with the Grand Lodge of New York, to re-establish Land, Sea, and Air lodge #1, which was originally formed in 1917, during WW1 for US Military masons in the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe.

We are now attempting to get it re-started here in Iraq, primarily for military masons here in Iraq, but any master mason, whose lodge is in communications with the Grand Lodge of New York (F&AM) may participate. I am a civilian, and I will most likely serve as acting WM, when the charter/dispensation is approved. The current WM is resident in Buffalo, NY. All officers positions here in country, will be filled on a "temporary" basis.

Charles - Are you still in Iraq? I tried to email to you when I got here to Anaconda, but my email was bounced. I thought you'd gone home.

I am very much in Iraq. I have been in Iraq since August 15,2005. My current contract expires on Nov 30,2007. I have applied for an additional year, so I will probably be in Iraq until Nov 30,2008.

Feel free to email me at

Yes, in Indiana, we have a military lodge called Sojourners Lodge UD (Under Special Dispensation) that only military, past and present can petition. Right now, while under UD status, they can only hold stated meetings and they are not allowed to conduct any degreework. There are other military lodges, but I am not aware where they are.

TO: CdoGunner .... I joined the Goose Creek Lodge No 401 in So. Carolina back in 1971. Got the petition from FTBMC(SS) Graves whom I worked with at the time, I was FTB1(SS). He was Senior Warden at the time and I heard that he went on to Grand Lodge. In 73, I left the Navy but later joined USNR, then even later the PANG... finally ended as USAFR Msgt, Ret. and I also joined PA's Beallsville Lodge and served as master for two yrs... they gave me a nice PM ring that I proudly wear. You may know that at the same time England's G.L chartered the first American Masonic Lodge of which Franklin was the first GM it also chartered the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge in appreciation for their service to the crown. I've noted that there are some good comments about how to find what you may be looking for.... LOL .

Hello Brethren,
I want to give you some news about LSA #1 Lodge. I have written an email to GLofRI. I was told that a new Lodge U D will take some time to start a new charter.
Please when you do write back to me. Put LSA #1 in subject bar. I would like to know more about LSA #1 future.

Please let me know when this it has been re-established, please. I am currently on active duty and in the middle of a PCS to Fairbanks, Ak. I've looked into the lodge both their in Fairbanks and the Grand Lodge in Anchorage. As of yet I am not a Freemason but I am strongly interested in bettering myself by petitioning once I get to Alaska.

The other reason this discussion interests me is because shortly after I arrive in Ak, I will be deploying for my third time. This time to Afghanistan.

So please get back to me ASAP.

There are many lodges in Alaska. Check out the Grand Lodge of Alaska webpage:

Here is a lodge in Fairbanks:

Fairbanks #12

I suggest that you contact the lodge in Fairbanks, and request a petition. You can join in Alaska, and your membership is transferable.

There are no F&AM lodges in Afghanistan at this time. I am relocating to Camp Speicher, Iraq, and I will attempt to establish a lodge there.

Not to cast stones, but this worth while endeavor is more than likely not going to happen. What is unfortunate is that there isn't a single non-Prince Hall Masonic lodge (Under Dispensation - UD) in either Iraq or Afganistan. However, there are several Prince Hall Masonic lodges operating in both Iraq and Afganistan.

There is one tragic story of a military contractor that sat in a Prince Hall Lodge and he posted this on his internet blog and he was discovered, he suspended by the blue lodge of his jurisdication because they did not recognize Prince Hall lodges period.

Note: If anyone military or civilian plans on visiting a Prince Hall lodge in Iraq or Afganistan, make sure that your respective Grand Lodge will allow such a visit. If you do regardless of whether or not recognition is an issue, do not advertise this to anyone and expecially not on the internet. To me, any Master Mason Prince Hall or not that meets me on the square is my brother. Anyone who feels differently is a racist in my book. Tough talk, you bet. There is no room for prejudice and discrimination in Freemasonry. Period end of discussion.

I am still optimistic. The Grand Lodge of New York invited me to assist in continuing the work of Land, Sea, and Air lodge #1 (UD). I was happy to assist the GL of NY, in this worthy endeavour.

I volunteered to assist the GL of NY in November 2005. In December 2005, the GL of NY, asked me to return the charter to them, and that they would issue a new charter for us to continue. They promised to send the new charter, "next year". That was in 2005, and now it is 2009, and I am still waiting on the charter.

I remain optimistic, but I would not be surprised if there were ever any operating "mainstream" masonic lodges in Iraq or Afghanistan. I have been involved since 2005, and I will continue to work with any Grand Lodge which requests my help.

I cannot understand, why masons in USA are not furious with this situation. There are four(4) Prince Hall lodges operating on Victory base complex (Where I reside). There are two Eastern Star chapters as well. The Prince Hall Grand Lodges of Texas and Oklahoma, sponsor most of the Masonic lodges in Iraq/Afghanistan.

I too, consider Prince Hall Masons, to be my brothers. I belong to a Massachusetts lodge, and the GLof Mass has full recognition of most, but not all Prince Hall Grand Lodges in the USA.

So mote it be.
