Just wanted to find out what you all recommend for a high quality personal all purpose knife. Would be used for camping, backpacking, every day use. I am looking at getting the benchmade griptilian. Does anyone have one of these? Any other suggestions?

Any high quality folder with at least a 4" blade, will do yeoman's duty in the woods or hills. Then again, a decent fixed blade is able to do more with less effort.

Personally, when I camp "modern", I take my Cold Steel Trailmaster for all my camp needs. This thing is big, heavy, and nearly unstoppable. It holds an edge long past when it should be dull as a rock.

However, when I go muzzleloader primitive, I only take my 6" patch knife (highly tempered, high carbon steel that is like a razor most of the time) and tomahawk. The only "modern" implement I have with me when I go trekking, are the arch support inserts in my moccasins Smile

A good Swiss Army knife (Victorinox) or multi-tool (Leatherman, Gerber) is good to have around.

IMHO the most under-rated knives out there are Mora knives, from Sweden. Look for the ones with a molded plastic handle. They're a little hard to find in most of the US, but you can get them from the Sportsman's Guide (http://www.sportsmansguide.com/), or a gun show, usually for $10 or less. Can't use them as pry bars, but they're decent quality carbon steel, and sharp as all get out. They'll cut almost anything you don't need to saw.

A marine issue KABAR is an excellent choice for a field knife and KABAR also makes many other styles of knives and tools for field use.

If a military style knife isn't to your liking a Buck 119 Special is also an excellent fixed blade knife.

The Buck 110 certainly is an excellent knife. I've had one for a few decades. I don't carry it anymore, I don't wanna lose it.

The knife I carried all over the place, on deployment, and I carry it daily at work as a Police Officer is a CRKT M16. Big, strong, easy one hand opening.

I'm also real partial to Gerber or Leatherman multi-tools.

That is funny what you say about the Buck 110. I inherited mine after my dad died. I only use it for deer hunting. When I was a kid though, I really put that knife to work.
I am looking for something that will work on the farm every day. The M16 is something I am looking at. The victorinox Trecker is another consideration
