Just wanted to find out what you all recommend for a high quality personal all purpose knife. Would be used for camping, backpacking, every day use. I am looking at getting the benchmade griptilian. Does anyone have one of these? Any other suggestions?
Any high quality folder with at least a 4" blade, will do yeoman's duty in the woods or hills. Then again, a decent fixed blade is able to do more with less effort.
Personally, when I camp "modern", I take my Cold Steel Trailmaster for all my camp needs. This thing is big, heavy, and nearly unstoppable. It holds an edge long past when it should be dull as a rock.
However, when I go muzzleloader primitive, I only take my 6" patch knife (highly tempered, high carbon steel that is like a razor most of the time) and tomahawk. The only "modern" implement I have with me when I go trekking, are the arch support inserts in my moccasins
Life ain't worth living, if ya ain't got a good cigar.
A good Swiss Army knife (Victorinox) or multi-tool (Leatherman, Gerber) is good to have around.
IMHO the most under-rated knives out there are Mora knives, from Sweden. Look for the ones with a molded plastic handle. They're a little hard to find in most of the US, but you can get them from the Sportsman's Guide (http://www.sportsmansguide.com/), or a gun show, usually for $10 or less. Can't use them as pry bars, but they're decent quality carbon steel, and sharp as all get out. They'll cut almost anything you don't need to saw.
The Buck 110 certainly is an excellent knife. I've had one for a few decades. I don't carry it anymore, I don't wanna lose it.
The knife I carried all over the place, on deployment, and I carry it daily at work as a Police Officer is a CRKT M16. Big, strong, easy one hand opening.
I'm also real partial to Gerber or Leatherman multi-tools.

That is funny what you say about the Buck 110. I inherited mine after my dad died. I only use it for deer hunting. When I was a kid though, I really put that knife to work. I am looking for something that will work on the farm every day. The M16 is something I am looking at. The victorinox Trecker is another consideration
