My last year in the CG was in 2002 so I am out of touch with CG reality. A good friend of mine who is a E-5 Special Forces Sniper in the Army which you may know is a very difficult posistion to aquire is due for re-enlistment in about 10 months.
He would like to stay in the military but switch services to something that does not require living in other countries or being shot at. ( As Much ) He is very interested in the Gunners Mate rate, and since I was last in 2002 and a FS I can not really give him advice on what it will take to transition from the Army and become a GM.
So I am asking if anyone would be willing to donate any knowlede they would have concerning this. Such as steps to take or who he could talk to since he does not trust recruiters. Thank you very much for any information you can provide. He is also interested in the daily life of a GM or if his exceptional sniper ability could be of any use as a GM

The best advice you can give him is to explain to him that CG Recruiters, unlike those in the other services, have no need to lie to potential members.

As for his sniper skills, they might be of use in a HITRON but bring no special value to the GM rating unless he becomes an SAI.

There is no doubt that he would drop down in paygrade.

Thanks I am sure recruiters dont, I am looking for info directly from a GM is what was meant. By the way whether or not you wish to believe it I have seen CG recruiters lie and have been asked by recruiters to say things that were not the truth during tours.

I also understand that GM's are not snipers. I was asking the question believing that a GM would know more about Sniper related jobs than another rate. I also have no idea what HITRON or SAI means and he probably does not either.

Thank you for the reply anyway

HITRON is the helicopters with weapons on board to disable go-fast boats. SAI is Small Arms Instructor.

I think you will find the closest fit for sniper type skills would be in the groups such as LEDET (Law Enforcement Detachment) or MSST. There's a MSST forum here that you can check out.

The new ME rating (also a forum here) may also be a decent fit.

GM's primary responsibilities are all about maintaining and training on the various weapons and weapons systems. More so then actually operating them.

Hopefully an active duty GM will see this thread and be able to provide you with more info.
