Does a lateral to GM happen very often? has anyone heard any success stories? In my civy job I deal with electronics, mechanics and hydraulics , GM seems like it may suit my skills better and my ASVAB scores were higher for it. Just curious.

I think maybe your choice of words may bit a bit off here "bncmycter". To lateral USUALLY means you're coming over from another service or even another rating.
If you are in fact "civy", than we have a somewhat different story.
Your career in electronics would be a plus if you are looking to be a true gun tech. If you're coming in to be a "law dog" then it would only help from your asvab scores.
In any case, do your homework and look through some of the previous posts regarding what it's like to be a GM. Make sure it's really what you want to do....then....come see us at A-School. We'll handle it from there! Wink

Dan:

His profile has him as a Reservist, looking to lateral over to Reserve GM.

With that said, I have an old friend who just retired from the CGR who had been an AD CG GM and then a Reserve GM.

Cliff had been a GM3 forever. Without access to bigger gun systems, Cliff stayed a GM3 through Gulf War I and until he finally lateraled to PS3. He retired as a PSC last summer.

Reserve GM's need to think about this.

IMHO.

Don't worry about any Weapons systems questions. Todays SWE has almost none on it. If you know small arms and admin, you too can be a Chief.

I wonder if and when the new LE rate gets passed if that will get rid of all the GM's complaining that they can't advance because of where they are at? And if that will bring back all the weapons system stuff in the servicewide for real GM's. Hmmmmm......
