Read "Shots That Hit" by William R. Wells II, GMCM, USCG, Ret.
Chapter VI, Middle of page 116 "However in 1970, in the midst of a deteriorating small arms program, the Coast Guard instituted its own two-week small arms instructor (SAI) course at Reserve Training Center, Yorktown, Virgina.... The 1971 course graduated 24 instructors with plans to train 24 more later in the year."

As a side note - All you GMs and SAIs need to be reading this book. It will give you a lot of history about small arms training in the Coast Guard. And you will realize that the tire just keeps getting reinvented. Even tho it was published in 1993, it will help you to understand how you got to where you are today.

Regards,
Tim Knight, GMCM, Ret

I went to a three week school in 79. Nice commute from Sitka to the east coast on Uncle, and a good time shooting to boot. I'll have to check with Bill to see where I can get his book.
Thanks for sharing.

It is published by the Coast Guard Historian's Office, and I believe that they are the only source of supply for it. I sent them an e-mail requesting a copy and it arrived in the mail about a week later. I was expecting a PDF format, but they actually sent me a hardcover book.

As Master Chief Knight said, it is a very good read, I keep my copy in my range kit.

The Historians Office has a lot of other manuals/books/information if you want to know more about the history of the service, or indivdual units or rates. I've asked them for several things, and they are always very happy to help.

I went to SAI in OCT-NOV 1979 as well. Great time with PSCM McFadden and PSCS Koelhoffer as well as the rest of the staff. Good bunch of guys then, and now.
Regards.

The only thing I remember was that it was jacket weather (flight jacket weather), could have been spring or fall?
The instructors were top notch as well as great guys.

Peace,
Dick
