You need to contact your local armory or your local GM.

Without getting into any particular details, practice two-handed bullseye shooting from 25 yards, both slow fire and rapid fire.

That'll get you up to speed until you enter the service.

Good luck!

Look up Navy F pistol course, I believe thats what we called it 30 years ago? We were shooting 45's and 38's. You really don't have too practice and some of the best shooters never shot a pistol before and had no bad habits. lots of people start of blowing holes in the ground jerking the trigger and later get marksmen, sharp shooter, and expert ribbons.
Good luck and listen to your instructors carefully and by all means keep that weapon pointed down range.
Peace,
Dick

Being that you are a "this member" and "considering joining", why is it so important that you know the course of fire and the qualification scores now?

You'll get your chance...

Because I am an avid pistol shooter (even own a 229) and would like to practice this course if possible.

I can't speak for the GMs, but as a former CG Small Arms Instructor and current Fed LE Firearms Instructor, I would suggest you wait until you're in Cape May. Your way may not be the USCG way, and any instructional baggage (i.e. shooting techniques) you bring may actually work against you when qualification day comes. As Jerry said, you will get your chance.

Your 229 may not be the same as the CG's 229.

Wait 'til Boot Camp.

p-229 DAK .40 is what I have.

Do you guys not know what the course involves or are just reluctant to give out the information?

I understand that the course may change from now till cape may but I'd rather practice that than make something up.

Duty in the US Coast Guard does not revolve around any single item (e.g. SIG Sauer P229). Duty as a Coast Guardsmen is a combination of skill, professionalism and character. That’s great that you have your own firearm; but I can assure you that majority of skilled Coast Guardsmen do not own their own cutter. Qualifying as a marksman, or better, is a good attribute. Knowing how to use it, maintain it and WHEN to use it, is what it’s all about.

If you’re proficient with your firearm you’ll do just fine. Use of a firearm is a small portion of anyone’s time in the USCG (unless they’re a Small Arms Instructor; and that too requires skill, professionalism and character as well).

If you’re physically fit and willing to work with others you should have very few challenges.

Holster the weapon and focus on your next steps.

I am an SAI and I do know the courses of fire, and the scores involved.

Many of the CG manuals are FOUO (For Official Use Only), to include the contents.

The Ordnance Manual may not be FOUO, but there is certain information that should not be out on the www.

Again, please, for the umpteenth time, wait until Boot Camp.

If you want to practice, practice what I have already preached. Wink

Good Luck!

I've had students proclaiming they were marine scout snipers, police sharpshooters even olympic shooters that couldn't hit the broadside of a barn using iron sights, so who cares if you own guns the trick is how to shoot them, so 12739433 I wouldn' worry about the course of fire if I were you, find out why you considered joining the guard. There's alot more to the Coast Guard than shooting, Take LTGunner's advice......

Being a range instructor here at Cape May, listen to the other folks and toss everything out the window that you THINK you know. It's better to show up with a preconcieved notion that you know nothing. You'll be much better off trust me.

Actually it's best to constantly pester the SAIs when you get to the range. Tell 'em stuff like "I was shooting guns when you were still shooting blanks" or "I got more trigger time than Roy Rogers" or "I own tons of guns and shoot all the time" or "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, I know". Yup, that's the way to ingratiate yourself with the instructors.

Funny story...

The family was having dinner at the in-laws, and we met my brother-in-law Jimmy's girlfriend Cheri (future second wife) for the first time.

Cheri had gone through Army Basic, but washed out and didn't finish.

During the course of dinner conversation, Cheri mentioned buying a pistol to keep up her "proficiency" she learned in the Army, and said she could probably teach me a thing or two. She also stated she could probably outshoot me.

Everyone sitting around the dinner table just stopped eating and stared at her. I believe it was my wife who started with "you have no idea what you are talking about". I didn't say a word, I let my family and in-laws let her have it. Jimmy just sat there silent with his head down.

I did get a chance later on at a local range to show her a thing or two.

Jimmy's been with wife number three now for quite a few years... Big Grin

It’s been a long time ago, but I’m pretty sure it was GM1 George “Rock” Mathis. Alameda Boot camp range day. Some dumb azz kid named Don, not sure, but could have been me. That day is still pretty foggy. Proclaimed I no he had been shooting an M1 Garand since age 10. When he “put” his hand on my shoulder I got a bloody nose when my knees buckled. After 18 years as an SAI, I really appreciated the students that had the 3 L’s down. Look, Listen, & Learn.
