I haven't been a GM for about 8 years, but I like to keep up on the new stuff. So my question is central to the new 57mm. I understand that the new gun utilizes a dual hoist mechanism to transport rounds from the magizine into the gun mount (I got that from BAE's website), allowing 2-different types of ammo to be used at the flip of a switch (or press of a button). Is this nessesary with the 3-P ammunition that's currently available?

Brian,
There is also some BL&P type rounds, that will be part of the ships NCEA. Cheaper to shoot! |

Basic Training |
Mk 295 Mod 0 (3P) HE Ammunition is a warshot/tactical round.
Mk 296 Mod 0 (TP) is an inert round that can be used for training, warning/disabling fire and, to a limited effect, surface harassment. The mount can hold both types in the upper loading system and switch between right & left upper magazines. TP is similar, but not exactly like the Blind Loaded & Plugged (BL&P) types of round currently in use. BL&P is an actual warshot shell(interior of the shell is scored for fragmenting) with an inert (blind load) and a provision for a fuze. A solid nose is used in place of a fuze. The BL&P round can have a tracer in place of the plug (base). In time of need, the nose & inert filling can be removed and an explosive fill & fuze can be added. TP rounds are designed to be a near ballistics matched to their warshot counterparts and cannot be re-filled. The interior fill of the round is balanced for a stable flight. More info on ammunition basics: Naval Gun Ammunition BAE's description of 3P: Mk 295 3P There are additional 57mm rounds available from a number of sources, SNC Tec of Canada (GD-OTS)& NAMMO. There's currently a Federal Business Opportunity (FEDBIZOP) for alternate types of 57mm Ammo:
