O.K. so your point is??

I mean we could start with the grand scion of the democrat party senate Robert Byrd.....who just happens to be a former Grand Kleagle in the Koo Klux Klan, who of course is now considered to be a paragon of human rights......

But then.....what would be MY point in doing so??

My point: the enemies of both Jesus Christ and of the United States of America who hide behind or have hidden behind the cross of Christ go back a long way in our American history.

When we speak of the "evils" of Islam or Atheism or secularists or members of the Democratic political party Wink, we should consider the beam in our own eye first before obsessing over the mote in another's eye.

I applaud you for taking a stance like this. If more Christians spoke out against those who are using the self-title "Christian" as an excuse for hateful acts, then those hateful false-Christians would have no power or influence. There are people of every religious "umbrella group" who do horrible things, and the people of those groups who disapprove of such things should say something. Moderate Muslim clerics have spoken out against the extremists and terrorists. It is reassuring when moderate Christians speak out against those who have done horrible things under the guise of Christianity. Again, I applaud you, and hope that more people are able to see the value in such statements.

We already have, over and over again throughout our history. Most of what you site is freedom of speech of the past and our democracy ensures that these kinds of evils of the past will not endure.
So, here we go again with another Christian bashing thread, hehhh...I guess everyone loves to feel self richeous as they reveal to others they have now moved beyond these past sins...we have evolved haven't we...We are now "the enemies of both Jesus Christ and America",geesh talk about ignorance... through those mentioned above we have learned lessons through their own ignorance, not that we all weren't ignorant and will always continue to be so,just with new issues, but at least you don't see us gathering in the streets burning the American flag after our terrorists flew planes into the twin towers. And you don't see our cultures clashing with the rest of us ignorant civilized nations across the globe as we witness the viciousness of the ones that have not yet emerged from the dark ages...but yes, we do expect more from ourselves don't we? We after all have been shown the way to peace...so yes, lets continue to fight umongst ourselves to shine like a beacon to the world that we should be looked upon for guidance while they continue to kill our soldiers, the innocent of anyone that stands in their way, even their own innocent, in this year 2008. Lets pretend that it's all over now and that it won't happen again. Their clerics have finally gained the courage to speak up and defend the innocent...but what about the rest of us infidels that are old enough to stand against them...how long will it take them to never believe in the ignorance of man through their religions. What is the hidden number with their box cutters still as beams in their eyes?...
No, I say recognize the times as they are today for the truth of what we still face...I recognize the beam in their eyes and I will carry the mote in mine until I feel I won't need to fashion it into a weapon against box cutters on my next flight...sorry if I hurt anyones feelings...but this is 6-23-08...I pray our future will be brighter as I believe it will one day be, but we are not there just yet...

- pray for peace always -
- know your enemy -
- stick together -

I guess there is not a ques. re: Obama's "former christian" pastor who also being human and subject to prejudices and weaknesses seem less perfect than Peas or Tawodi you or I ought to pretend to be. All have fallen short etc. Wink

Phelps-whole nother can of stuff.

Moon- cult leader, not "christian".

I once read that Falwell recieved money from
the Moon-man to bail out the ministry. U spin that one way, I spin it thus. All resources are ultimately the Lord's and thus end up where they glorify G-D. Smile Happy Day and great 4th to all! Cool

Hi Fightdirector,

I don’t know too many folks on your list – in fact, I’m not even sure how they all even fit on the same list called “American Religious Right.” Henry Ford, Gerald Winrod, Ron Paul, David Duke, etc… Are you saying “these” were all part of this co-called “religious right”…?

Are you saying Falwell, Robertson, Tim & Beverly LaHaye, are enemies of Christ & America? I remember when Billy Graham first went to the Soviet Union prior to the wall coming down. He took a big hit – traitor – unchristian – yada – yada… Billy Graham didn’t bat an eye – the door opened and jumped at the opportunity. Ironic isn’t – how many years was after that when the wall came down… hmm…

I agree folks in public positions are held to a higher standard but does that mean, they can’t make mistakes – grow up and learn to change – even repent from holding wrong views? Can’t they be a little human too – think they’ve learnt-dim selves something special only to find out it wasn’t so special!!! Can’t they be a bit passionate – fired up with some zeal – chew the cud a little too far right-then-left – then, oh heck what’s the use…

I know a guy who was pretty sharp witted. He snubbed most of the religious leaders wherever he attended. In fact, he didn’t go to any particular church – probably cuz most folks wouldn’t put up with him for too long. He constantly said stuff that still gives people heartburn. He was too lazy to get a job – bummed food and a place to sleep off every town he went. He was always preaching but, man, he hung out with whores, liars, and malcontents, or whoever – he didn’t really care as long as they at least acted like they were listening.

Actually, when I think about it, it was whoever would hang around really – he really just didn’t care who it was but it matter to others. I guess in some ways he probably thought he was doing so good or at least keeping them out of trouble. The powers that be didn’t think much of it though, he’d go into towns stir up a freaking mess – then leave the mess for everyone else to clean up. Sort-a like having a Woodstock or mini-Woodstock’s – people would show up but no one had anything planned – no bathrooms, food, or anything except a freaking crowd and giant mess. He talked like he was religious – but didn’t follow any of the rules didn’t even carry a bible for that matter. He bummed off of everyone. He had no formal education, which showed because he was always talking in goofy stories – some even contradicted what was already well taught. After a while, he started irritating enough folks and the real irony was his arrogance – going into towns acting like the new faith healer – praying for people – gimmick after gimmick. Thankfully, I guess, so they thought, they finally caught-up with his schemes and dealt with him. Sadly, by that time, he was already self-delusional and the knucklehead was starting to believe he started something. He actually believed some of the nonsense he was preaching. It didn’t take long for him to find out who his friends were though – yep, crack the whip – hit the sirens and the ole gang just busts for the door… Kind-a typical I guess… He stuck to his guns though even acting arrogant to the judge. Oddly, if you didn’t know better – sometimes the guy kind-a reminded ya of Charles Manson or something. He was just too sure of himself – too arrogant, so they thought. They finally fixed his butt real good though – he wasn’t preaching after that… Stuck his butt up on a cross – everyone felt sorry for the guy – he was obviously delusional by then – talking to himself – talking to his father, I mean, man, sounds like another David Koresh, Jim Jones, doesn’t it… another fruitcake trying to impress the world… go figure… A guy that says stuff like that – hanging out with people like that – creating such a ruckus like that – ya know the guy is up to no-good… Heck, even if it was hard to figure him out – all anyone had to do was look at the people he hung out with – places he hung out and again, too lazy to even get a freaking job… I sometimes wonder what would-a happened if that knucklehead wasn’t dealt with. He was starting to draw bigger & bigger crowds… I guess it’s a good thing we have religious leaders looking out for us… ah..

The oddest part about that ordeal was at the end. It was almost spooky really, the guy kind-a pulled himself together for his last hurrah. Then blew everyone’s mind, he looked down and then forgave those bastards who whipped him to a bloody pulp – forgave the dudes who spit on him – he forgave the pricks who even drove those nails into his hands & feet. It was as though he knew why and realized it somehow it wasn’t there fault. He actually even said that – they don’t know – they didn’t know as he asked his own father to forgive them too. It was strange - but after that he just cried out as if he finally realized everyone abandoned him, even his own father… Man, it was hard to stay there but by then it was getting dark. A nasty storm came up so folks just left.

Yep, some folks say some dumb things – some folks do some dumb things – some folks do both… go figure…

My point – if this guy could forgive these guys, can you? If someone were to write down every dumb thing I’ve ever said, I suppose there probably isn’t enough paper to fill the books. Most of us are passionate about something – passion begets zeal – zeal begets hyper-focus – hyper-focus begets blinders – blinders begets dumb stuff spewed, which in later years we usually wished we hadn’t said. I know from experience – still gots the blinders hanging on the wall – bridal too – hoping to remind me not to go there… but sometimes, I don’t know what it is – I wake up the next morning and know I did what I should not do and for whatever reason, man, I end up doing what I know I shouldn’t do… ya know, I really hope that dude forgives me too!

I believe Graham's criticism came from the religious right, Onion. Graham didn't bring the Soviet Union down, kid. Money did, and corruption from within. We out spent them... mammon did it. And they did it to themselves. And when the 'wall' (E. Berlin) came down there, they didn't rush to church or to buy bibles. They ran to porn shops and liquor stores.
Graham also went to India around that time, largest crowds ever as I recall. But did India become Christian? No. Maybe to keep the Russian Republic from becoming so corrupt we should send Graham back? Wasn't he in China, too? And North Korea? Let's see now, where else might that man of god had a historical consequent???? I think he has been just about every where but... send him to Iraq! NOW.

You give your religious notions too much credit.

BTW, Onion, all these floods in Iowa, Missouri and such... what did those people do to bring the wrath of god upon them? Not pray hard enough? Somebody get an abortion? Maybe they were going to have a gay parade, like some evangelicals believed about New Orleans troubles a while back?

'Cause and effect' explained with god talk is so wishy washy and childish. Right up there with "the devil made me do it'.

Good point! The religious mind is racked with 'conspiracy' of one sort or another, seeing the invisible world of gods and demons manipulating the courses of history and events... creating and destroying, etc. But then, as one of my favorite sayings goes, "Better a flimsy conspiracy than no explanation at all!"

Hi Duce,

Hmm, and I thought you’d appreciate the story-line…

Graham’s criticism was indeed from the religious but not just the religious right he caught flak from all sides. No, Graham didn’t bring down the wall – but here’s a little slice of history – you may or may not know that was going on at that time… this is only a few snips

German Embassy Website
Leipzig's Nikolaikirche: An Eternal Beacon of Peace and Hope in Saxony

Dresden's Frauenkirche is an international symbol of baroque beauty and peaceful postwar reconciliation. Leipzig's Nikolaikirche stands out for a different reason: this Lutheran church, its pastor and congregation was the epicenter of a peaceful protest movement which eventually brought the Berlin Wall crashing down in November 1989.

Leipzig's oldest and largest church formed the backbone of the "Montagsdemonstrationen", or Monday demonstrations, undertaken by brave average citizens against the repressive and crumbling communist regime of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). The memory of this inspiring chapter in Saxony's recent history lives on through the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church), which goes by the motto "St. Nicholas - open to all" and attracts thousands of visitors annually.

WHEN THE PEOPLE WERE HEARD

The demonstrations began after prayers for peace in the Nikolaikirche with Pastor Christian Führer and filled the nearby Karl Marx Platz square. Bolstered by support from the Lutheran Church, many dissatisfied East German citizens gathered in the church's courtyard, and non-violent demonstrations began in which they demanded rights such as the freedom to travel to foreign countries and to elect a democratic government.

Informed by word-of-mouth and by television about the events, people in other East German cities began repeating the Leipzig demonstration, meeting at city squares on Monday evenings. Things came to a head on October 7, 1989, the 40th anniversary of the GDR, when East German police battered and locked up peaceful protestors.

Tensions ran high again on October 9, 1989, when some 1,000 East German communist party officials had been ordered to fill up the 2,000-seat church during a Monday service. After the peace prayers ended, thousands of people carrying candles were waiting outside to greet people coming from the church - "an unforgettable moment" Reverend Führer states on the Nikolaikirche website.[b]

[b]"The miracle occurred. Jesus' spirit of non-violence seized the masses and became a material, peaceful power," adds Führer, who is still the church's pastor today.

"Troops, (military) brigade groups and the police were drawn in, became engaged in conversations, then withdrew. It was an evening in the spirit of our Lord Jesus for there were no winners and no defeated, nobody triumphed over the other, nobody lost his face. There was just a tremendous feeling of relief," he writes.

"This non-violent movement lasted only a few weeks. But it caused the party and ideological dictatorship to collapse."

The most famous chant of the demonstrations was "Wir sind das Volk!" - We are the people. Although some demonstrators were arrested, the threat of large-scale intervention by security forces never materialized. The demonstrations ended in March 1990, around the time of multi-party elections that led to German reunification.[/i]
------end---snip--------

Say what you want – but that’s directly from the German Embassy in DC – they apparently believed it was bit more than mere money. There were lot’s of things going on over there… Considering the history and tensions – one could easily call that a miracle. Yet, sadly, not even something as monumental as that qualifies for some… reasoning, they had to do it anyway, they were going bust… or who knows maybe Reagan’s pronouncement to tear down that wall was just too overwhelming…

Oh well…
