Im in the Airforce and i had a question about what it takes to get a remission approved. I have a daughter whom i support through child support every month. I have proof from the mother stating i pay. Finance told me i was entitled to full BAH when i got to my base, i was living in the dorms at the time. Over time, about a year, i get an email stating i wasnt supposed to get the money and i now owe 8000. I just got married and moved off base but with the 8000 dollar debt im not sure i will be able to afford anything. I make 620 a month in pay and once they begin taking the money out i will have 0 each paycheck. I was told by my first sergeant (E7) and the senior (E8) over at finance i was entitled to the money, what course of action should i take to fight this?

Thank you

If you want something said ask a Man; but if you want something done, ask a Woman! Margaret Thatcher

You would have qualified for BAH w/dependents if you had custody of the child 50% of the year. As you were living in barracks you should have not received BAH w/dependents at all unless it was during Basic and Tech School. After you reported to your base and you were living in barracks you should have only been getting BAH-dif, the difference between BAH w/o dependent and BAH w/dependents. So yes you do owe them for that. You would have gotten BAH w/dependents as soon as you got married.

Talk to Finance and see if payment arrangements can be made. you should also find out if your child support can be lowered, because if you are only getting $620 a month after Basic, BAH and BAS then that is pretty low. You can also talk to Emergency services in which they might be able to give you a interest free loan to pay back Finance. You shouldn't owe them the $8000 but the difference between BAH w/dependents and BAH-diff.

you were told wrong, sorry to say.. you were only entitled to BAH differential .. NOT BAH at the Single rate

the only time you get BAH single is if you were living in town. living in the dorms you are NOT entitled to BAH Single, not even with the child support order.

I'm sorry to hear that man. What you could do is apply for a loan to try and soften the blow of your financial sitaution. My friend John is in the Air Force and when his funds got tied up he used militaryloans.com and they gave him like $5,000. That's probably your best bet actually because even if you do have to pay the loan off at least you'll get a paycheck every week. Good luck to you my friend.

IF what you said is true about the E7 & E8 saying you were entitled, you should have finance help you submit a waiver of indebtedness which could wipe out all or part of the overpayment.
