I just finished 2 classes that were paid for by TA, and I am about halfway through my upgrade training (first-term airman also). I had been over to the education center on base to talk to various colleges and get information, and while I was over there learned all about getting TA and everything. So I got all set up with a degree plan and decided to take some classes. At no time was anyone in my chain of command involved with any of this.

A few days ago I mentioned that I had just finished some classes the past weekend to an NCO I was working with, and she questioned me about it later. She said that I need to have my supervisor's approval to take classes and that some other first-term airman in my flight were told that they could NOT take classes because they were in upgrade training (still in their CDCs). Around the same time I mentioned to another airman that I was taking classes and she was shocked, because someone told her that she could not take classes. What's the deal with this? Am I breaking the rules, or are they breaking the rules by denying these people college? Can they even do that? I remember the counselor that helped me file my degree plan and everything said that we USED to have to get approval from our commander to take classes, but not anymore.

What's the regulation? I'm one of the newest airman in my squadron, but I have no problem stirring up the pot if they aren't going by the book. On the other hand, if I'm wrong and I was supposed to have approval then I will admit my mistake to them, but I don't see why grown adults can't take college classes in their free time if they so choose. I'm kind of upset about this to say the least. I'll ask over at the education center too, but I wanted to know if anyone else had experience with this or knew the regulations. Thanks Smile

Yes, do read the regulations and teach them what you will learn or do abide by the book. I am a retired USAF, MSgt, 21 n half years so I have experienced on what you have posted but not so current on the policies so that's the best comments I can give.

I "think" your situation did not break any rules provided you are okay with your upgrade training.
