I am thinking of joining the CA SDF in the near future. I am a Navy/Navy Reserve veteran (got off active duty in 1990 as an E-5, drilled from 93-98 as an E-6), and have been a Navy civil servant (GS-11) for the past 10 years.

I know I shouldn't be worried about rank, but will my civil service experience help being brought in as an E-6, even though I've not been associated with the military for almost 10 years?

My guess is that you would probably be brought in at your highest grade.

I second that opinion. Might even get E-7 because of your continued Navy employment depending on what you currently do.

GoKings57,

just go for it! work those details out after you visit a UTA and talk with the unit you will be with, they will give you a better answer than any of us. E5, E6, E7, whichever rank they offer to start at I hope you join. check it out some time.

In the last 18 months I haven't seen any prior service come in any higher than their highest federal grade. Even if they have the schooling, were on a promotions list, nothing. I've had some E-7's who had everything and could have been E-8 except there was no slot at their old unit, HQ only gave them E-7.
