Could anyone give me the straight scoop on this outfit? I have heard that its a political organization that awards commissions based on what you can pay. And yet on their website it looks so up and up
Thanks Bruce |

Yes, it is a legit organization and you're talking primarily about allegations from a pretty biased and generally inaccurate article.

Here is the scoop as I am a member of the New York Guard. We are part of the state organized militia,I am a soldier I was NOT politically appointed! Many good people from all corners of the empire state give of themselves in the New York Guard. As for pay sometimes I can't pay for a cup of coffee no less pay for a commission! NO COMMISSIONS ARE NOT FOR SALE IN THE NEW YORK GUARD!!!!! WE in the New York Guard will be there when our state calls us......WILL YOU? www.newyorkguard.org www.dmna.state.ny.us www.56nyg.net

Islaguam. I asked a simple question because I heard some negative comments about the guard. Have another You said you were ploitically appointed could you please explain? Yes I will be there if my country calls. There is no reason to caste the pall of non patriotism on me for simply asking a question. Perhaps there is more to the NYG then you are willing to admit. |

The New York Guard is part of the state government of the state of New York. It is a military branch within that state. It operates under federal law (32 USC 109) and New York State law. Commissions are not bought and sold. You have been given correct information above. |

How does your unit differ from the National Guard? Can you be activated and sent to Iraq?

Cervantes, I am sorry if you felt that I was questioning you patriotism I did not mean it that way. Many people come in here and look down upon people in the State Defense Forces they try to make a joke out of it,I am sure you must have read the piece in the NY Times about the New York Guard because that is where that story came from, nut have you read this http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=NWFiYzZlNGEwNDY1Ym...YTYzMmRkMDQ2ZmQxZTY=
As for being sent to Iraq we are the "State Guard" we have the state defense mission when the "New York National Guard" is kicking butt on federal orders. We in the NYG have missions like CERF-P and MERN these are serious missions tasked to us by the state of New York. It would be nice if you or someone you knew wanted to join the NYG to find out what really goes on. |

This person is making comments along the same vein in the CG Aux threads as well, so I wouldn't fall into the trap of getting too worked up.

I had heard of a political hack getting a Brigadier General commision from the Guard without any credentials. I asked if it was possible

Cevantes...
The BG you are referring to, entered the NY Guard as a junior officer. His initial rank as a junior officer, was awarded based on his academic and professional credentials. After a lot of time, effort and dedication, he has worked his way up to BG. It makes me laugh when I hear people complain that State Guard positions are political. Since all State Adjutant General positions are politically appointed, why doesn't anyone ever complain about that? |
