Hi everyone! Proudly serving in the Ohio Military Reserve here. I am curious. I've searched "State Defense Force ribbons" and Ohio Military Reserve ribbons", but I've only been able to find charts, or pictures of others ribbon racks. If our supply folks don't have the ribbon we need, where are we supposed to get them? Would Vanguard carry them?

Best answer is maybe.

Because NG and SDF ribbons/medals are a small part of the decorations market, you can't always find them.

Most of the ribbon makers will make them for you BUT they usually want you to buy lots of 100 or more at a time.

The other answer is to order a mini-thin or ultra-thin ribbon rack.

This a custom made ribbon rack where all your ribbons are embroidered as one solid piece.

They look very professional but they're kinda pricey.

They can easily embroider NG and SDF ribbons into the mix if they have an example or a regulation to work from.

Annual Training ended today for the Ohio Military Reserve. Ribbons were available there with the G4 and sold out of the mess hall during the week. Ribbon assistance comes from your unit S4 and you can go to Rickenbacker and get them from the G4 at the monthly drill of the headquarters. Your chain-of-command can assist you with this, seek them out.

Hi Michael,

I was aware of OHMR's training ending today. I had to leave Sunday night because of some lower back issues I was having, so I'm not happy that I wasn't there. I was just curious like if I wanted to order, say, enough ribbons for three service uniforms (no, I don't have a service uniform, but I'd like to be prepared for when I do). I will talk to my team leader, and on up if necessary. Thanks again!!

Shuman,
The ultrathins are really good looking. I was unaware that they embroidered the ribbon design to a rack. I was looking into those when I was in the Civil Air Patrol, but decided against it. Thanks for your suggestion!

Question for Y'all. Say a SDF member decides to join the Air/Army National Guard. Would they be able to continue to wear their SDF ribbons because they are state awards?

Normally State Defense Force members going to National Guard service would have to leave off the SDF ribbons, much like those going from National Guard to federal service have to leave off the National Guard ribbons.

I would agree as a "general" rule that is true but every State and Territory is different and there are "possibly" States that do allow the wear of SDF ribbons on their ARNG/AFNG uniforms.

I agree it would depend on the stat regs. SDF ribbons are state awards, just like the NG ribbons are. Now, AR 670-1 is pretty vague, and if read literally then Army National Guard soldiers would not be authorized Air National Guard ribbons, even if prior service. So from the way I read it, as long as it is a state award, then it can be worn on the uniform while under state orders:

quote:
State awards for ARNG soldiers. Army National Guard personnel are authorized to wear State awards under
applicable State laws or regulations when assigned to the ARNG under the command and control of the Governor or
Adjutant General, under the provisions of title 32, United States Code. The term “State” includes the 50 states, U.S.
territories (which include Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands), Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. The following
personnel statuses are included in this authorization: Active Guard Reserve (AGR); active duty for training (ADT),
active duty for special work (ADSW); full-time National Guard duty (FTNGD) for special work or training, annual
training; and inactive duty training (drill status), including periods when personnel may be attached to the active
component or reserve of any service, whether paid or unpaid. Personnel will wear such awards in the State order of
precedence, after Federal and foreign awards. Soldiers on active Federal Service, under the provisions of title 10,
United States Code, are authorized to accept but not wear State or Territory awards.

Another example would be that here in Georgia we have Army National Guard ribbons, Air National Guard ribbons, SDF ribbons, and state DoD ribbons. All are authorized on the SDF uniform, and it seems Army National Guard soldiers would be able to wear the SDF ribbons just like the state DoD ribbons, in addition to the Army National Guard ribbons.
