I can not find a job at all. I have been unemployed for three years. Yes I am a veteran and I am somewhat disable. I have a degree and I still can not find a job. I have a resume and cover letter and references. But I have not a single employment lead. Job fairs done that. Careebuilder.com and other job sites done that even went to try to start my own business. What gives? Is it because I am a woman or my race... I want to relocate does not matter anywhere in the world except Iraq, afganistan, pakastan, well you get the point. Violin Violin Violin Mad

OK. What is your profession? Why are you not getting jobs?

The first thing you need to figure out is why you are not getting the jobs. Introspective sole searching is very important for career success. Sometimes people have trouble figuring it out. If you are working with a recruiter they can help you by providing follow-up. I once did not get the job, although I was the runner-up. The recruiter was able to find out why. Sometimes (and I have been on both sides) you can go back to a person and say why was I not hired. Ask in a non-confrontational way. You are trying to make yourself more appealing to the next employer. What do I need to do?

If your resume is not getting interviews, then you need to tackle that first.

My service years where 1981-1984 in South Carolina, Georgia, Germany and Texas as a 31M10. Since then, I have "25+ years of experince" in the administrative, media, broadcast, it, customer service, management and more. I managed after a "short" military career.
I was diagnosed in 2005 with PTSD and MDD due to MST after I suffered a "nervous breakdown" on the last job. The Psychological Profile was the first time that anyone had bothered to ask, so a lot of things that were buried became exposed. Because of non- esxistant legal relief processes and such conclusive evidence as DNA provides, MST had changed me in 2005 similar to the way it changed me and others 23+ years ago. But nobody asked. Today, offenses like hazing, sexual assaults and other agregious activities are closely monitored. Hopefully. Thankfully because of hometraining, formal training in the medical, weapons, life skills and survival training through my military and civilian careers, clerical and administration, business management, Arts, Broadcasting and Media, Theatre , Marketing and Advertising and Internet Skills through personal and professional careers, I have a lot of skills. In other words, I don't have a degree, but have "years" of various experience. Unemployed, going fishing. No, I have not given up, but going to take a sabatical and search for the purpose of it all. The VA centers that I have dealt with follow the programs that are designed for counseling and medical maintenance, but not financially. That's up to me to decifer on my own. I interview well, or am made to feel that I do. But I come away with few calls for the job. I have a pending appeal with my case, but hopes of a favorable decision look pretty dim.
Life is still going on. I was a good soldier, with an Honorable discharge. Is there really a job for me in the Government?

I served in the 70s in the Navy. I worked of Ohio State University for a few months after the Navy, but have chosen the private sector for the last 30 years. I could have retired fro Civil Service by now, but with my SC disability I am now semi-retired.

It is near impossible for someone with years in the private sector to make the transition to Civil Services, unless you are talking about Senior Executive Service or a Political Appointment.

IF anyone is recently separated/retired and is disabled and having trouble finding a job, please go to this website Hire Heroes I am personally receiving assistance from them. It's Free. They are getting ready to launch nationwide as well. They are getting job orders from companies who want to hire disabled vets. Just yesterday I had a phone interview with a company and it's looking very promising!!!! Feel free to email me as well.

You may want to get in touch with your local State Vocational-Rehabilitation Services dept and see if you'd be eligible for help.

You know what? I am a female disabled veteran (and minority) & I'm very offended by your post. You really have not done us service by the things you said & the way you worded it.
What I dont appreciate is your trying to blame things on sexism. Of course I know that there are a lot of disadvantages for us female vets but please for the love of crap dont start asking if its because of that!! Things are rough enough already.

Looking for your shoes? Sole: Having to do with the foot or shoes. orthotic.

Soul: The animated vital principle in humans, credited with the faculties of thought, action, and emotion.

sorry but with the total un employment at around 5 percent that relates to full employment in reality.

there has to be other issues, has to be.

what are you told, what are your qualifications,
what are you trained in,

you could quite (sadly) have other issues not yet explored, suggest you talk to someone and do it soon.

regards and best wishes from a ret us marine

I had the same problem when I retired from the Army in 1995 - with a Master's degree an two BA's. I was 41 years old. It didn't take me three years to find employment, but it did take about 9 months.... In my own mind, I came to the conclusion that my age was not helping... and as proud of my military service as I was, it was not helping either. I don't know if your age is an issue for you, but your military background might be. I don't think that there are many civilian employers - and especially 30 something aged managers that know or understand the unique skill sets that a vet brings to the job. I imagine that we all must look like we grew an extra head when we go into the job interview... I have read that many employers are hesitant to hire vets because they're reading about the PTSD issues that are cropping up in returning vets. What a shame. I finally found employment in state government, and gave up totally on trying to get a job in the private sector.

I think that the advice to get with an organization that is wanting to help vets get jobs (like Hire a Hero) is your best bet. On the other hand, if, as Ira stated, there are other "issues" that you know you need to address, then seek out help in those areas, as well.

I wish you luck. Just keep plugging.

Thanks everyone for explaining this to me however the issue is where I live at. I live in the poorest county in South Carolina... Although I have completed my degree at USC....the only job I could get in this county is working at a resturant. Furthermore, I even try to drive to another county. And it is to my misfortune that I am over qualified to work in the surrounding counties.... Well, I wish I could go back into the Navy but I am higher Teniure...... So.... I guess I not good enough to find work.... Might as well go on welfare.
