There is no increase in the economic index that is used to calculate the COLA, the CPI-W or Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners. No Federal compenstation programs that are COLA based are expect to rise as the CPI has been flat or negative for the past 12 months.

Most of the time we (RETIREES) get half what the Active Duty gets. I believe I heard the Active Duty are getting 3.8% so we should get 1.9 or 2%. About the same as I will be getting this year in Civil Service (2% for all Federal Government Employees).

You may get 2% Civil Service but the CPI is in tne minus, so I don't think we will get a raise in our retired or disable check. Dave M. might help me on this.

Any allowance that is based on CPI will not see an increase in 2010.

Uh...Regarding retired COLA and federal employees: folks retiring under the Federal Employee Retirement System enjoy a retirement COLA equal to the CPI - if - the CPI is 3% or
less. Above that it is the CPI MINUS 1%. Now, how sweet is that?

An even more robust deal is how FERS retirement is computed: 1% a year. Yeah, twenty years gets you 20%. You think military retirees get messed over?

hey MAC...you GURU !!

Got a question...are you being sarcastic with the FERS retirement? because you used the word "robust"

The Q: Wouldn't the FERS calculated retirement just about equal that of the Military given that they (my understanding) make about 2 x that of military pay?

I HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF FERS OR CS retirements, so this post is a curiousity Q..ONLY !!

I believe that if Congress wants to they can give a small non-cola increase to vets receiving compensation this year. Since COLA is a tied formula they have used for year, it is not cast in stone, and a 2% increase would be nice.

Did you read that somewhere? is there a proposal out there for it on the NDAA?

No, just reading the legislative history. No proposal, just my comment.

Freddy...Sarcastic, I guess. Sorry, that is usually not good communication, as it might be understood. I probably should have used the word "busted".

I'm not sure how to answer your question without looking at a GS/WB pay scale (I'll do that next). I have no idea how much a USPS letter carrier earns with 30 years, but I would think it would not be more than, say, a military E-9.

Today the E-9's base pay at 30 years is $6863 per month. His retirement pay would be 75% or $61464 a year (discounting any high three year stuff). A letter carrier earning the identical amount as th E-9 would retire with about 30%, or $24,706.

I probably should mention that postal workers are not on the GS pay scale. but rather on a different one - the PS thing.

Good question, Freddy. All of the above is my assumption only. Your mileage may differ, depending on road conditions, etc. (Oh, wait. That is something else.)

Dave, I might have read something like that also. Bet if something like that happens it will be a one time paymemt, and maybe enough to buy the wife a pair of shoes.

As of today, we won't receive a COLA for 2010, but there is a bill being introduced in Congress requesting an emergency COLA for us. I don't know what the current status of the bill is, and I'm very concerned that the COLA is still being used against us. The COLA is not an accurate measure of inflation. It does not take into account food or energy costs, including gas for our old cars. The disparity of pay should be eliminated as it was in 1985, and we should be matched with the active duty military and federal civilians. My retirement pay is 25% less than a person reiring today with the same rank and years of service. The other groups I mentioned will receive a pay raise for 2010, but not us. Shameful. I urge everyone to write or call their congressmen today. We need to eliminate the disparity of pay for all military retirees.
