Any Russian immigrant to US could've told you that Russia is no friend to US. The politicians there have an easy time getting popularity by simply criticising the West and Russia's neighbors. People want to have a controll of their own destinies, which means that Russia has to remain sovereign. And Russians are always told that there's a threat to that sovereignity coming from the West.
United States obviously can't trust Putin. His main goal is to maintain controll - just like anyone in his position of power. He can keep his popularity as long as people think that he's doing Russia good. Which means that he has to strengthen Russia and undermine it's competitors. And at the moment, United States is regrettably seen as competition, not friend. That will not change any time soon. There's little that US can do in order to fix that. It's simply the result of generation-after-generation of being told that Americans are evil and want to take over the world, plus the fact that there's no way for an average Russian to find out the truth about American goals in the world. |
