I've been looking for something fun to do this summer, and I am considering joining CAP as a cadette (I will be 16 in a few weeks), however I don't really know what its like. What I don't want is adults treating us like we are 11, and having to hold our hands in order for us to do anything of significance. I am an aviation enthusiast, and I would love to receive some of the training that CAP claims to offer, however I'm afraid CAP will be like somewhat of a "Avation daycamp, for kids!", where we have to take a "buddy" or an adult to walk anywhere more than 10 feet away. Upon research of CAP requirements, this seems to concern me more considering they let 12 year olds join.
However, I haven't talked to anyone about it, and I'm only making assumptions. You rarely come across organizations that deal with young adults that actually trust them and treat them with respect and dignity. Hence, my concern. I want to know if CAP resembles somewhat of a military environment, without all of the screaming and insults, but with the same seriousness and intensity. Having adults of an organization of this sort be obsessively concerned with the safety of the participants can be maddening. What can I expect from CAP?
Why don't you check out some of the discussion forums. I know there is one called CAP talk, or something like that. You can also go to a meeting of your local squadron and check it out for yourself. That seems like the best way to get a feel for the unit, and by asking questions here and on another forum, you can get some great, current answers.
