My name is James Smith. I am a Flight Sergeant for a squadron in Florida and I am having some problems with my cadets. Some of them seem happy to be there but others look like they are there because their parents are making them. The ones who show no motivation have been dragging down other cadets with them and it is really starting to irritate me. They are not following the chain of command, and constantly ask off-topic questions. Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to deal with these problems? I've tried everything I know, and it just is not working. Your suggestions will be most appreciated.

Where is your senior member leadership in all this? You really shouldn't be on your own dealing with this; after all, to some of these cadets, you are seen as nothing more than another kid... They need to be sat down by an adult who projects a clear air of authority over them, and who can sit down with the cadet's parents if necessary.
On your end, the most you can really do is limit these cadets' effect on the rest of the unit. DON'T respond to their antics publicly and/or with yelling and other theatrics that they're looking to get out of you. To address the "not following the chain of command" issue, you need to coordinate with that chain of command. When a cadet goes first to an officer over your head, that officer needs to simply tell them nothing will be addressed unless it goes through the chain. That's it. If they run into a wall in every direction other than the chain, they'll follow the chain. As for "off-topic questions" you'll have to elaborate on what you mean. If they're asking questions when they shouldn't be, simply say it's not the time for that, and leave it at that. If they can't get a response, they'll eventually quit doing it. If they're asking inappropriate questions, it may have to be dealt with in other ways, up to and including taking them to a senior member depending on how bad the questions are (i.e. derogatory or harrassing material, etc) Most of all, you need to talk to a senior member in your own chain of command. They are there to support you, and to train you on these matters. |
