Hello all,

I am currently a 23 year old professional in northern VA. I have always had a love for aviation and I would very much like to give back to the community by possibly volunteering in the Civil Air Patrol as a Senior Member.

One piece of information I've found difficult to find is the availability of flight lessons for Senior Members. I know that it is not a part of CAP training, but I'm also aware that many CAP members are certified flight instructors. My ultimate goal would be to fly for CAP.

Does being a member provide one with better channels to work towards a Private Pilot's License while serving?

Any information is much appreciated, thank you!

There is absolutely no primary flight training given to CAP senior members. Once you get your private pilot license and if you find a willing CAP instructor, you can work towards higher ratings in the CAP airplane (at your expense). So, you're going to have to get your license with a private instructor or flight school.

However, CAP has a great need for other members of the aircrew. The right front seat position (Observer) is critically important as they operation communications and direction finding equipment and assist the pilot in navigation duties.

The person in the back (Scanner) is the main guy doing the actual work -- looking for the missing airplane or taking photographs of disaster damage, etc.

Best advice is to go to at least 3 meetings of your local CAP unit (and don't be afraid to visit multiple units in your area) to see if you will like it there. Ask questions of everybody, not just the recruiting officer or commander to get the real scoop on what the unit has been up to.

Ark is correct. I'd like to add that once you are an integral part of the team (e.g. spotter) you will inevitably make connections within your aviation community and perhaps you may be able to get some better rates or trade some skills for hours, etc. just a thought...
