Can someone be both a CAP member and in the Coast Guard Auxiliary?

You sure can. I even heard of some people in the CAP, USCG Aux and a SDF.

Yep. I wouldn't advise joining both at the same time though. In whichever one you join it will probably take you a year or two to get your feet on the ground and get some "basic training" stuff out of the way, though this could vary depending on exactly what you want to do.

Thanks guys! That makes sense. I think I should look into CAP first and possibly do CGAUX later on.

Just an addendum for what its worth...getting your Mitchell will be worth E-3 if you go into the USAF someday. It will get you E-2 if you go CG. Either way it is a good milestone to shoot for. My daughter will get her's nest week and is planning to use it for the AF. Good luck.

Yeah, you can join both, but I strongly recommend joining one or the other. Both take a lot of dedication. I am a Staff Sergeant in CAP. I had a choice of joining either CG AUX, JROTC, or CAP, and CAP (sorry if you descided to pick CG) is by far the best. Good luck with whatever you choose!

If you for some reason enlist in the U.S. Coast Guard, you will leave Cape May as either an E-2 (Seaman/Fireman/Airman Apprentice) or an E-3 (Seaman/Fireman/Airman). I have no idea what a Mitchell is, but rest assured, once you graduated from USCG basic training you would be either an E-2 or E-3. |

You can also get advanced rank in the real military based on achievements in the CG Aux boatcrew program...

Mitchell is an achievement that a cadet earns in the cadet program of CAP. Once the cadet passes the Mitchell exam then, he or she becomes a C/2nd Lt and is eligable can become E-2 or E-3 depending on the service when he or she enlists. |

I researched each and I choose CAP. |

just because you researched CAP and decided thats what you wanted to join, does not make is "by far the best". Also, you apologize to those who joined the CG Aux as if it was a horrible decision as apposed to CAP. I was just curious what it was about the CG Aux that you thought was so bad, and why CAP was so superior to it. If thats just your opinion, then fine, say that. But don't make a blanket statement like that without giving some sort of explanation, even if it is that its just your opinion. |

I feel comfortable speaking for him by saying that for someone under 17 CAP is superior to CG Aux in that you can't join CG Aux at that age so it really wasn't an option for him anyway.

I apologized because I said CAP was better, and if he joined CG Aux, sorry I wouldn't offend him. CG Aux isn't horrible. |
