Question...I took the ASVAB when I was 18 and 19, needless to say I rushed through and recieved a failing score both times...I am 23 now and I just took the ASVAB today and recieved a 48 AFQT score and a GT score of 96...My question now is, am I going to be able to take the ASVAB for a 4th time? I know I would do well. Thanks.
Once you have a passing score, the regulation states that retesting is not authorized simply to improve your score. You would have to justify that for some reason your score was significantly lower than it should have been. You state you just took the ASVAB, got a new score, but think if you take it again you would somehow do better. Why do you think a second shot will improve your score? You will take a diff version of the test and in fact may score worse rather than better. It is good that you managed to improve your score this time. Your score is not bad and you can get some decent jobs depending on your other line scores. GT score doesn't matter as much as people think. To get a job in the Army you need the right line score for THAT job. A high GT normally pulls the rest of the scores up, but you can score well in specific areas with only an avg GT. Lastly, you must wait 6 months to take the ASVAB again. In that amount of time many things can happen that would actually disqualify you for entry. Something as simple as a sports injury or law violation with suspended sentence, probation, or deferment for a traffic ticket can disqualify you from applying when you want to later. Best bet is to do what you can when you can. GT improvement is offered on active duty for free, and you have a reenlistment option to change your job to something else when you do your first reenlistment. Good luck.
Bottom line to what randomsoldier said is, If you can get the job you want with the score you have, then there is no need to retake the ASVAB. Don't hesitate to take that step forward. Just do it if this is something you want to do.
