I am SPC and active duty in the army wanting to be a recruiter and possible ending up as 79R. I tried calling my branch and got an answer saying i need to be a SGT to go recruiting. I have a wife and kids and i don't think i qualify for that. What is the best path to take. I am motivated and believe i can recruit a lot of young motivated males and females into our great army.

Do yourself a big favor my friend and be carefull what you wish for...you just might get it! I don't care how much you think you're able to relate to young people your age...the fact remains that recruiting is one of the worst and most difficult assignments there is.

Your marriage will be tested over that 3 year period and it's probably a 50/50 chance that it will not last. Your kids will see very little of you since you'll be working 12-14 hour days as well as half days on Saturdays.

I was D.A. select for recruiting duty and lasted 2 years of my 3 year assignment until it got so bad I actually requested a discharge from recruiting and the Army entirely.

If you don't believe me I suggest you talk with some field recruiters in your area and see what they say. Most will echo the same things I've just said.

I can only say that my son, after returning after his second tour of Baghdad was DA selected
recruiter, and after 3 months told me he would volunteer to go back to Iraq in a heartbeat! Eek

i was a recruiter for 15 years. i am a retired SFC with 20 years active duty that made E-7 in 9 years. i have several awards from recruiting excellence (recruiter ring, msm, 4 ARCOM, 6 AAM, etc...) and in the end they wrecked my career and tried to keep me from retiring.

divorced twice.

the good thing was, being a recruiter for 15 years, i was a little smarter than the average bear.

wait til you make E-5 then think about it REAL HARD!

I can tell you, I spent 2 years of my life fighting for my ex-husbands career because of the recruiting brigade. They pushed a career soldier with a flawless career of 17 years to deep depression, drinking and self medicating. And instead of getting him the help he needed, they pushed him further and harder.. "Put 'em boots!" His self medicating, which happened once. He took one pill of mine, an amphetimine for A.D.D..

They made mistakes from the get go handling his case and instead of admitting it, they went from offering a letter of reprimand to a general under honorable.

The Major and the Lt. Colonel committed perjury in the admin. board. (proven with witness testimony and legal documentation) yet they walked away and even gave him his next NCOER.

The entire chain of command lied and cheated so much, they lost track of their own lies and started attacking each other. There were threats made, bribery offered to witnesses and so much worse.

This command made a Garrison Command Sergeant Major testify that the case made him ashamed of his career. USAREC destroys good soldiers, ruins families and lives and doesn't miss a beat...

Run soldier run!!!

Well said!!!

Your description sounds just like the Milwaukee Recruiting Battalion back when I was on duty. After 2 years of that degrading assignment I can honestly say that I was ashamed to wear the Army uniform. Frown

Thank you but, never be ashamed of being an Army soldier, be ashamed of what the Army, USAREC and other Recruiting Commands are doing to our soldiers, new and career alike.. And for any of you reading this, if you have good honest leaders in your chain of command make sure you take a moment to thank them because, you have no idea how blessed you are..

I am a proud RRNCO SPC4 type in the RIARNG. The ARNG always hires E-4's to do the work of an E-7. It's not at all easy but, it is rewarding to those who bust their butt. I hear that MAARNG is ALWAYS hiring RRNCO's. RIARNG is not hiring any more since we are the smallest state & we are filled with hippies & commies!
Best of luck.
There is only one way to find out if you can become a soldier.

YOU have to make the call.

There are 5 military branches. Each has a very important mission. If you feel that the RI ARMY National Guard is the mission for you, call me to see if you qualify. Current enlistment bonuses vary. Call to see which is best suited for you.
Respectfully,
SPC.Erik Lee Conley (RIARNG)

As a former recruiter, all I can tell you is that recruiting is what you make of it. But, be careful what you wish for as someone already posted on here. I received my first Article 15 my first 6 months on recruiting duty. Two months after that I was selected for E-7 SmileAfter that I just did my part to stay out of the spotlight. I never recruited Highschool Seniors or females. And that saved me a lot of headaches. And I always had my 2 people per month in a non-walkin market. I stuck to the College market and workplace. My last 18 months on recruiting duty, I had 3 day weekends almost every week and was out fishing or hunting. It's all about time management and getting people to work for you (Networking). I saw alot of people get hired and fired during my tour, while I stayed out of the spotlight. I don't suggest you do it this early in your military career. Wait until you are atleast a SSG. E-6.
