My brother in law is a commercial airline pilot and is looking into CG aviation. He is Green red color blind. The FAA allows a test and he passed. Is this a DQ in the CG

Thanks

The MEPS physical is all that counts.

Actually, the flight physical is all that counts and you cannot be colorblind.

They both count and neither allows for the 'on the road' test that the FAA allows. Aviation or not, you either pass one of the two tests administered at MEPS or any other physical, or you fail them both and are determined to not have 'normal color perception.'

I guess my point was that people can pass the MEPS physical all day long whether it is for colorblindness or whatever and be accepted into the CG. They will not be able to go aviation unless they pass a flight physical which is much more stringent on just about every level. So it doesn't matter if he can pass the MEPS colorblindness test he will still have to pass the flight test.

One must pass the MEPS color test in order to go OCS, DCA, any "O"program. Don't pass it one won't become an "O". Flight physical, yes is more stringent, color tests are the same.

There is a doctor in Maryland who guarantees 100% that you can pass the test with his color correction system. Check out his website http:/www.colormax.org . Color vision correction changed my life as I know have my dream job. I personally thinks its discrimination against color blind people. People who wear contacts lenses can't pass a regular eye test without their lenses. So I why should be any different for color blindness!

It sure is. And as a military organization, we discriminate against other physically handicapped people, fat people, dumb people, old people, nazi's, etc etc every day.

Corrective lenses for color vision are currently not accepted/authorized. Period.

krbyjns, You need to take a good looks at the Coast Guard Medical Manual Chapter 3-D. There are tons of folks we won't take for medical reasons.

When I was back in college, and first started flying, during my flight physical, I had trouble with the book that has the little dots and numbers.. They tried to tell me I was color blind... I told them they were crazy!

To the best of my knowledge I had no problems distinguishing colors.. (apparently I do have some trouble with the very light color shades)The final outcome was... I had to go to an FAA opthomologist to be tested. I went, got tested, and passed. To this day I still have trouble with those damn books, but, I made it throught my CG career, and 100 ton Captains license physical, which is still current. I usually take the Farnsworth Lantern test. (I think that is the name of it)

Wray... Cool

Not being able to distinguish between port and starboard running lights could present a bit of a problem...... Big Grin

Wray, I had the same issue with the book and the same results when they gave me the other test.
