I am considering enlisting in the USCG, and I have about 15 hours of stick time as a civilian. Does this hold any water when enlisting?

I am a 22 year old college student and I am looking for some adventure and money for college.

Not exactly sure what you are asking. Are you asking if you will get a promotion based on that? or are you asking if you will be able to get a specific job with that training?

Will I be able to get a specific job with that training?

"Some" training, as in completed ground school, not just 15 hours of bootleg flying?

tankkllr: how many hours of flying did you have in your Army Aviator Course? Do you know how many hours the CG requires?

Where would 15 hours fall into those courses?

JerryG,

Flight training in both services is about 150-175 hours as I recall. So 15 is a drop in the bucket.

However, with that said, a little flight time can help someone do better on the assessment tests. But other than that, it won't do much.

Ghostrider,

Your initial post and your second post kind of contradict each other and I still don't know if you are confused on something or if you are thinking of enlisting first and then trying to go to flight school so I will throw some stuff out.

You do not enlist to become a pilot. In order to become a pilot you must have a degree and gone through OCS or a service academy to become an officer. You must then compete for flight school. 15 hours of flight time won't help much more than giving you and understanding of what you will see in the assessments.

You will get all the adventure you want but you will have to commit to about 11 years of service to get it.

If you are enlisting, flight time means absolutely zip and won't help you get any specific job. If you are enlisting to go to flight school, you are taking the long way and there is not guarantee you will get flight school let alone OCS. If you are enlisting for the desire to serve your country you will find it very rewarding.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

I figured as much, but wanted to make sure anyways. Yeah 15 hours is not much at all, but like you said, could potentially help me in the beginning with understanding helicopter flight, if I choose to go that route. I definitely want to join up to serve my country, and make some money to continue school so its win-win for me either way. Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.
