I am planning on going to college during my career in the coast guard. Now knowing how they must operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I heard that AVIATION careers are the only ones with Shifts like morning shift, afteroon, and graveyard shift. Is this true or not.
Thanks George H.

There are other CG jobs that are 24/7/365.

Stations, Sector OPcenters, ships underway, PSU's deployed, even certain MSU's, etc.

The CG is like a police department, 24/7/365.

Some large Air Station units run three shifts during the week and duty sections on the weekend.

Fitting in attending College classes takes lots of planning in any rating in the CG. Being assigned to a shore unit obviously makes it easier, but still not simple.

Planning ahead with your chain of command helps in planning duty rotation, shift assignments, etc.

Remember, your obligation to the service comes first. Even in the best of circumstances, the "needs of the service" change. So might your plans for a semester.

I'm not sure what your long term plans are, and that affects my suggestions, but here is one example.

You know you are going to do one enlistment. You make sure to enroll in the Montgomery GI Bill while in basic Training. While in, you use tuition assistance to take classes part time. You know that you would like to go back to a certain area of the country and list of Colleges. You work with an Education officer and look up in the Servicemember's Opportunity College Guide (SOC) to find Colleges and Universities that will accept in transfer the courses you have taken on the side, while active duty. You might also find you can take, and your eventual College of choice will accept in transfer, CLEP or DANTES exams for college credit.

When you leave active duty, you might also be able to stay in the reserves and be able to build on your time in from active duty, plus that monthly addition to your income will help.

Just one scenario.
