Check out this H-60 from Cape Cod; it was performing SAR demonstrations along the Hudson River during Coast Guard appreciation weekend, August 1, near the Intrepid Air, Sea and Space Museum. Nice art work, Cape Cod! (Thanks for the pictures, Lou...)

Looks good, but if it ain't a HITRON bird maybe a smiley face would have been more appropriate.

OH NO, that Whirly Bird is OUT OF UNIFORM!
If the wing-nuts get teeth on their toys, us Gunner's Mates should be allowed to bring back our art work on the "hood ornaments" on our Cutters! GUNS |

What, me worry? |
I dunno, kind of looks like it's smiling to me! |

If you met a girl that smiled like that in a bar would you take her home? |

At least she has all of her teeth, right? |

The artwork reminded me of the stuff you'd see on the ALPAT deployment crew's helos back in the days. Anyone know if they're still doing that?

It's a good looking bird and looks so much faster/sleeker than an H3 or a 52, but agree that a nice smiley face is probable more appropriate.

I intend to live forever. So far, so good. |
In an OIC did that to one of his station boats he probably would be RFC....
Kinda funny how the double standard can be alive and well these days.. Wray.. |

Hello Wray, I'm not sure if the ALPAT deployment crews still do temporary artwork on their aircraft or not; but it's possible this nose art might have been temporarily authorized by the command for whatever reason. I've asked a few folks to see what the story is behind the "teeth"; hopefully a follow-up post is coming. Hope all is well. mm |

I still say...if it ain't armed the teeth should be painted over....just a big toothless gummy smile....

Kind of looks like one of the chickens smiling in the movie Chicken Run.
Wray...that's a good thought....maybe some of the small boats should start doing some small artwork to promote unit/boat pride. It could be some already are???? |

John, I hardly think anyone would get approval to do such a thing on their boats.. many years ago some tried and were told to follow the Coatings and Colors system manual. You know, sorta like the unifor regs.. you are told how it should be, and not everything that is not authorized..

Wray, All anyone has to do is (1) ask for a waiver or (2) submit a change to the manual. John |

Hello Wray,
I've been told that the helo in question was a bit of a hangar queen (sitting around for an extended period of time awaiting maintenance, etc.) and the crews decided to give it a set of teeth while it sat around. Word is the command liked it so the helo kept the grin for a while as a "good for morale" gesture. Doesn't sound like it's going to be a permanent smile, though. (Thanks for the scoop, Senior Chief "Buck"!) mm |
