hey guys i am getting ready to join the coase guard and was considering the os rate. i was wondering if this would be my best choice in regards to air traffic control. i was under the impression that the guard did not have an actual atc rate. that is something that i am really interested and would just like to ask someone what the best way to get there in the coast guard would be. if not atc what is the closest thing to it?

You will find that there is no job in the Coast Guard that is going to give you the skills to be an air traffic controller.

I guess an OS might have a remote opportunity to do some air traffic control on a larger ship but it will be about .0000000000001% of your job. Unless you consider watching a RADAR air traffic control. Most times underway there is only one aircraft operating within the ship's control area and they already know where they are going so not a whole lot of controlling needed. The folks on the ship just keep track of them.

You might on the rarest of occasions be able to guide an aircraft in on a low visibility approach but again, the helicopter knows where its going and is using the ground RADAR as a guide to double check his approach.

Good luck.

The Army, Navy, and Air Force all have Air Traffic controller MOS/specialties. It will have to be a decision of what you want more. Do you want to be in the Coast Guard or do you want to be a controller more?

Ditto everything above. Well, I think tank over estimated the portion of your job that might be ATCish. Someone for sure is gonna come in here and suggest OSs and a VTS, so I will pre-empt and say that is hogwash. VTS is a highly important and distinguished skill set that is NOTHING like ATC.
