Direct Routes:

CG Academy > Officer > Apply to Flight School.

Graduate 4 year College > Officer Candidate School (OCS) > Officer > Apply to Flight School

Indirect Routes:

Enlist > apply to some kind of PPEP academy prep program > CG Academy > Officer > Apply to Flight School

Enlist > make E5 and complete two years of college credit (it varies) > apply to OCS > Officer > Apply to Flight School

Become Aviator in another service (such as Army Warrant) complete tour > apply as a Direct Commission Aviator (DCA) > go right into CG Pilot Job (with training in type).

This is a simplified listed. There have been two other ways; civilian pilot direct in, plus an AVCAD program for enlisted, but very limited.

Serving Suggestions: Besides using Capital Letters, keep focused on your schooling, get plenty of math and science courses, and plan on a math or science major in college if you want to be considered for a Commission in any of the Officer Corps.

This should keep you busy searching out these programs on the web. Good luck!

I'm going with #1 and going the fastest way to flight school, Also if you want to go to civil collage then flight school i believe you have to go to OCS then to Blue 21 flight school.

It is college not "collage". Unless you meant if you want to go to a civil collection of photos or drawings blending together.

Additionally, one does not have to get into the Blue 21 program to go to flight school for OCS. Blue 21 simply guarantees flight school for those candidates who attend a qualifying school assuming they graduate college and OCS. Many members go to OCS and compete for flight school from there. If they don't get accepted they have multiple chances to try once they are in the Coast Guard as an officer.

hey guys,
I am in the process of applying to OCS and the Blue 21 Flight Program. I am currently active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and finishing my Business Degree at Loyola University. I am starting my civilian flight school in about a month to get my Private Pilots License. The requirements for Blue 21 are, Bachelors degree from a 4 year school, with a student population at least 25% minority. There are some requirements about what type of degree you must have, ie. engineering, aviation whatever, but if you hold a Private Pilots License, you can have any degree you want as long as its a Bachelors Degree.

Oh, one more thing,
I have been in contact with LTJG Dahl who is in charge of the Blue 21 program, he says submit application packets for both OCS and Blue 21 at the same time! check out the recruiting site for the info

Another, more direct way.

CG Academy > Flight School

They took 20 from the 2008 Academy class directly to flight school.

I am 29 years old, turning 30 when im in boot camp in december. i have 88 college credits and an associates degree, going in as E-3. Im not too far off from finishing my bachelors degree. considering my age, would either option above be possible for me?
im sure it will still take 2 years to get to E-5 or more, going in as E-3, correct?
or if i finish my bachelors degree quick, would i be able to submit a packet to OCS?

I will learn to fly rotorcraft one day and i would like it to be with the CG if possible.

Do some research but I think you may find that the age cut-off is around 30-31 for flight school. Hate to burst your bubble but sometimes they take age waivers. Good luck! Beer

Hey everyone, this is my first post on Military.com and I'm happy to have a place to post my questions and comments about my future in the Coast Guard. Big Grin
I'm 27 and shipping out in July. I have about 7 more classes at Embry-Riddle before I graduate with an Aviation Maintenance Management degree, and am starting out as an E-3. My question is, do I have to wait 2 years AND reach E-5 before applying to OCS (assuming I finish school)? Or can I do one-or-the-other? Thanks.

Why not apply for OCS out of college if that is what you want to do?

It's 4+ years and E-5, or you can do it as soon as you enlist(or before). There are temp and reserve commissions. If you have less than 4 years in you will be applying for a reserve commisson, 4+ and an E-5+ will be a temp commission. The reserve commission board typically meets 2x a year and the temp board once. Reserve commission is also what civilians apply for.
