I have done some research online and have found some info. saying that the USCG is slowly warming up to the idea of PRK as a method of correcting vision for the aviation feild, as the Air Force has> Is there anyone who works with a fellow coastie who has gotten PRk and now works within aviation such as AST or AMT or any designated aviation job?

We have a guy right now who is in the recovery portion of PRK who is an AMT. He can't fly until the doc says he's 100% but he's still a very productive AMT mechanic. Each case is different so you would have to dive into the medical manual and to see where you would fall as some eyesight problems can't be fixed with PRK.

I'm not in aviation but I did have the PRK procedure at Bethesda in 2006. I started out not to bad at 20/100 vision. There were patients there with vision as bad as yours. The procedure was painless, just the 2 days afterward were bad. As long as you take your medicine as directed you will recover quickly. Within 3 days I was at 20/40, a month later 20/20, and now I am at 20/15.

Thanks for the real life explanation. You hear all about what the medical manual says but rarely about real circumstances and the experiences of CG personel. Thats what im looking for, thanks jafo.
