Sorry Ollie, gotta disagree with you on this one. We have already had a belly-full of interfering in Iran's internal affairs when we engineered the overthrow of Mossadegh and installed the Shah, who was later thrown out by the very people that this new generation of Iranians is protesting against.
I sympathize with these protestors somewhat, but the fact remains that the government they have now is one their people chose. It was not imposed on them by Stalin the way the Communist dictatorships in Eastern Europe were. So I don't really feel any responsibility as a citizen of a democratic nation to do anything about it. This is an internal matter and we should not interfere. Besides, the way things are going we will be in a war with North Korea soon anyway. |

Wow -
It takes a lot of chutzpah to write an article like this, with these remarkable claims w/r/t such recent history. That makes me ask Mr. North (who the byline attributes this article to): "where were you and did you read or understand even the most basic aspects of our national (let alone) world history?" Ronald Reagan was a great orator - and our first "teflon president". But Ollie portrays him as the saviour of the nation and killer of Communism, when all he really did was continue the SAME policies as all of his predecessors (starting with democrat Harry S. Truman). The CIA was clear that the USSR was going to self implode and that it was only a matter of time - and in this respect Ronald Reagan simply got lucky as being the guy in the White House when it happened (in addition to the USSR having a more realistic leader for once). The policies of this nation (and the US government) during the cold war WORKED. It maintained the peace, and contained the Soviets (history conclusively proved this). Ronald Reagan did take almost the entire Social Security surplus, and spend the entire thing on weapons systems and rebuilding the military. In 8 short years, the US went from being the largest creditor nation to being the largest debtor nation on the planet. There were scandals galore (Ollie's Iran-Contra being one of the most memorable, and towards the end of his term President Reagan referred to Oliver North as one of the most dishonest people he ever met - but I digress). Again - he just happened to be there when the USSR finally collapsed under their own weight. Thanks so much for the "tawdry" example of how you don't criticise your country when you are out of it - how insipid can you possibly get (I should be afraid to ask that question)? Moving on to Iran, one of the things that Ollie forgets to mention, and that we can be reasonably certain galls Mr. Obama's predecessor, is that at least Iran HAS elections. They are vastly more democratic than our "staunch allies" (and old Bush family friends) in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, amongst others. Yet we don't hear Mr. North (or any of the conservatives) making any noise about THEM. Why do you suppose that is? What are you (so-called "conservative") Americans thinking about freedom? Ollie? Ollie, are you there?... HEY, OLLIE? <sound of crickets chirping in the distance...> |

The turmoil in Iran has just started, now the movement has legitimate martyrs.... Iran will have waves of violence each time they mourn the previous martyrs which will cause more martyrs... That is their political cycle.

PolicyWonk: well said.
Footnote regarding O.N. revisionism... If one does some basic research, one is immediately reminded of what a debacle "Urgent Fury" was... troops given tourist maps, incompatable radio communication systems between services, U.S. troops not even being told where the university students were, the students they were supposed to be rescuing, and worst... most U.S. casualties coming from friendly fire, not from any presumed enemy. Any contemporary pundit citing the invasion of Grenada as supportive of American interventionism is a pundit too lazy to do the research. If he did, he would let Grenada fade into obscurity. |

Ronald Reagan did take almost the entire Social Security surplus, and spend the entire thing on weapons systems and rebuilding the military. In 8 short years, the US went from being the largest creditor nation to being the largest debtor nation on the planet. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Social Security is a pay-as-you-go system, aka ponzi scheme to anyone else but the government. But it is true the S.S. has been running a surplus since the mid 80's, but the checks are wrote by the treasury to... the treasury.(Kinda of weird) So its basically IOUs that is spent by the government not just a president but everyone and their mothers in the House and Senate who come up with the spending bills(each year bigger than the last of course). So by 2015(or sooner) S.S. will start to run a deficit again. Well we have all those IOUs(of 5.4trillion) collecting interest right!?!... well not really because the treasury holds these IOUs to in a trust but not in actual investments that can be sold out on the free markets. So there is really no interest because the trust interest is being paid by the creditor and the debtor..(really really weird). (I just keep coming back to the Dumb and Dumber clip of those two running around Alpine with a suitcase full of paper IOUs in their briefcase HAHAHAHAHA) So if that doesn’t cheer you up, then you have to look out and see how much the treasury has promised to all those Americans who are retired, about to, or have paid into the system(cough Ponzi Scheme) that comes to a total of about 50 trillion........ oh and throw on another 20 trillion for Medicaid..... almost forgot.... + whatever nation healthcare scheme they come up with... + the dozen or so stimulus programs that "save" American jobs/houses/votes.... We have always had debt since we started taxing and I bet before that. But now we have a absolute mountain of debt that is going start raining down avalanches of despair. So we get to look at astronomical inflation because the US dollar is going to be devalued and... higher taxes across the board to pay off the our debt.. so kinda fits the term stagflation... that is where my bet is.. Belize is sounding like a pretty good place to live right about mow. |

Then perhaps you should move there...!
Obviously, the only "relic of communism" on Military.Com is Oliver North. |

Maybe if we all ignored anything presented by North, didn't post anything, he would go away!
People such as North need tension, confrontation to justify their place in this world. Without it, they would be lost...so make up things, attempt to rewtire history...whatever brings tension, confrontation, fear, he will use it. And maybe, North should have remained in Russia, help spread 'freedon' to all of those Russians...I'm sure Putin and company would have gladly accepted the help. Ollie could then invoke the Reagan mantra...see how far that would get him with Putin and the boys! S/F Gordon |

Almost everybody attacking Ollie and not the purpose of his dialogue, REAGAN's efforts against communism.
Wonk covered a bit on Reagan, but Social Security is a socialist scheme anyways that won't be available to me anyways, so who gives a crap about it. The point is: DID or DID NOT Reagan's actions/speeches have an impact on defeating Communism? And should PBHO done more? Both are debateable. Unfortunately, many like to attack many op-ed authors and not their message. |

You cannot separate the man from his actions, and Ollie's actions and opinions have always bordered on the inane and absurd. So it is only natural to go after the messenger.
Short of attacking Iran, there isn't a damned thing we can do regarding what is happening in that country. Get tough, like the leadership there cares about anything we have to say! And why give the Iranian leadership an excuse to initiate more violence toward its own people? They are looking for an excuse, any excuse to claim we are interfering in their domestic matters to justify any action they take against fellow Iranians...including becoming more violent. One of the problems I have with North, and other neo-cons, their constant claim the government cannot do anything right! So one would have to assume this would include our military, the FBI, the CIA, the NSC, Homeland Security...everything the government is involved in. Maybe they would be satisfied and happy if we had no government at all? In essence, the right was in control of the US for at least 30 years...and what problems did they solve or resolve under their leadership? The fall of Russia as we knew it? Not hardly! Russia was going down the tubes and Reagan just happened to be president at the time its final collapse occurred...as someone has already pointed out. And what do we have now...Putin and company! I believe we will see Russia become a totalitarian state...again. And some of the impetus in that direction is due to the mistrust by Russian politicians of the political right here in the US...nearly everything to the right comes down to the end of a barrel of a gun and bombs as the answer for implementing change in other countries. The war in Koreas never ended. We pulled out due to our national intrests that were short sighted. Kinda like not supporting a movement in mass with in a country that would greatly reduce a huge threat to America. |

Wow I love that whole term Neo-Con, except it doesn't really apply. The conservative movement is not new. Hasn't been new since, oh say the late 1700s. We don't go away, just a majority of get apathetic when leftests are allowed to lie. As for your comment, well, I can kinda see your point. More is needed sometimes than just support. Unlike Iraq under Saddam Huessein, they may not have reached a point where they are just looking to the strongest power for freedom in the world to sanction the assination of their head of state. However, we are being watched. How we respond we set a stout precedent for the next decade pretty much and right now we look like the loser punk in the back of the class that suddenly realized everyone is watching him. And you are severly mistaken about conservatives attacking the government. Those who attack the government attack those who stand in opposition to what a great many people stand for, strong individual freedoms, strong united front to the world and smaller government and taxes. |

There was nothing short sighted about what transpired in Korea. After China entered the war, the equation changed dramatically...ya couldn't kill your way to victory when facing potentially millions of troops.
Also, it was a UN action, and as such, we were compelled to follow the dictates of that body and their decisions. There was little more the US could do under the circumstances. Despite what happened in Korea, we still refused to heed the warnings about being involved in a ground war in Asia...we tried Nam. And we all know what happend there. Agreed, the Korean War is only in state of cease-fire. It is not over. We should have destroyed Pyongyang back in 1950 and put Kim il Sung's government on trial, then we wouldn't have to worry about them. But we didn't. We may still get the chance eventually. And anyway my post wasn't about Korea, it was about Iran. There can be no question that they chose their current government. It was not imposed on them. If they are dissatisfied with it now that's fine. That puts them in a totally different category from the South Koreans we are charged with defending, or even the North Koreans who have all been brainwashed by Kim Jong Il's cult of personality. In Iran, it is in our national interests to sit this one out, and wait to see what happens. |

Yeah we left an ally high and dry. We allowed the communist north to sweep in a destroy peoples lives and commit ethnic cleansing. Not to mention left a group of veterans ripe for a NAZI like leader, thank God that hasn't happened yet. |

The above comment makes about as much sense as a man trying to stand on his head in a pile of BB's. The NAZI references from the right have now become a cliche...and are oh so absurd. Referencing them only makes people look and appear ignorant...an afraid of their own shadow. S/F Gordon |

There has been a fair amount of criticism from the right-wing w/r/t how Obama's response has been weak. What it hasn't been, much to the credit of this nation, is knee-jerk reactionary or short-sighted (the approach apparently favored by the conservatives, who should know better by now).
The president is one who has to have the judgement and pragmitism to know better than the average schmuck on the street how to react to events in Iran. So far, PBHO has handled the issue well, and is taking a long-term approach to foreign policy (as opposed to appeasing those who obviously don't know any better).
