Very well put! All of us need to keep this spirit up. We are winning in Iraq and Afghanistan, hands down. The Nation's priorities should be reevaluated, movie stars and musicians aren't heros. Those brave men who earned the CMOH are definately this Nation's finest.

Those who earn the CMOH are and (and in many cases) were the finest this nation has to offer. These folks are an inspiration to us all.

Whether we are winning in either place is a different issue. The military aspect of it is being undermined by the unaccountability of the mercenaries (amongst so many other poorly considered decisions)and whether we beat the bad guys on the battlefield doesn't matter: it's the results after the smoke has cleared and whether we have more friends afterwards than beforehand that counts.

At least in the world opinion and foreign policy areas, Iraq is a complete failure. And, considering that the entire Iraq war as conducted by this administration is being funded by loans from the Chinese (who are now in a position to cause us serious economic damage). The CBO has estimated the war in Iraq will cost the US $2.7 trillion dollars (in current dollars - not counting inflation that is inevitible because this adminsitration is flooding the money supply causing the value of the dollar to drop like a stone). And we get to pay interest on it all (the US national debt has doubled over the past 7 years).

So, IF we "won", we did it by mortgaging our future finances, damaging our economy (we have yet to account for replacing, repairing, & overhauling our equipment - not to mention the boots on the ground), and destroying the international reputation of the United States as an added bonus.

So I'm glad we're "winning" (BTW - the international press, whether friend or foe, does not agree with this assessment). But if you ruin yourself in "winning", and the people you "won" for hate you in the end, and you rally more terrorist recruits over to the bad guys side, then you really lost. The NIE concluded that as a result of the war in Iraq, we are far less safe than we were beforehand.

So I hope "winning" is worth it.

As to Americans paying more attention to celebrity than to true heroism, O. North is right on the money. But no need to play up the favorite boogyman of American Conservatives, the mythical "MSM" of which O. North is actually a part. If O. North wants more attention to real heroes, maybe he should devote more of his op-eds to the subject first. So far, he's done more of the very "MSM" thing of advertising his commercial show on the subject. More op-eds like this as a card carrying member of the "MSM" and maybe Ollie could start a trend?

Good article.

Let's face it; most Americans would rather read about celebrities than soldiers. I don't blame the media. They only print what sells.

I make it a personal rule not to judge success by the agreement of the press, be they friend or foe. I see gross errors in reporting here daily. So the press can "F off" and so can anyone else who justifies their defeatism buy respouting garbage that the press reports.

And it does actually matter what happens on the battlefield. We are going to have friends and foes before and after regardless of the outcome. The only difference is, we are engaging the enemy in combat instead of on US Soil.
