I was angered at this article, but certainly not surprised. Most of the revenue generated will go towards a tobacco bill? This is something Congress would do. They should double the allowed life insurance limits, and the government should pay the difference in premium. We can spend millions in researching belching cows, and marketing efforts to make people feel better about their cars, but cannot do the same for families of fallen Soldiers and Marines? It seems our priorities are a little skewed.

Believe me, even with the current benefits that get paid out by the Department of Defense and insurance that many troops buy into, those who lose spouses in Iraq aren’t sleeping in mounds of cash. The increase proposed by Democrats will mean a hell of a lot. I have heard absolute horror stories on the type of cutbacks that widows and widowers have had to make because the government doesn’t provide enough to those who lose a loved one in war.

You speak true words, but sadly this aint gonna do any good. I personally think, that we can challenge them through the world wide web, with articles with critics regarding them. See how the world reacts.

I agree let's make an effort through the web, I mean there are so many people that browse the net everyday so we can make this work.

This is one of the most obscene aspects of our government. Widows have had to endure and make the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Not only to sacrifice while their husband or wife is away when they're on duty, but to lose them altogether. And that the government cannot find a way to adequately compensate them is appalling.

These widows are deserve it. Can you imagine how hard their life will be without husband as the back up bone of the family? In this economical situation the allowance raise is much better and appreciated.

While I appreciate any increase in SSIA, I would prefer that the Congress pass HR775 and S535 to eliminate the SBP/DIC offset.

Also, some house members{no bill number assigned yet]are searching for co-sponsors to introduce a bill to increase DIC rates which will benenfit many more widows.

The government is hoping the widows of the Vietnam war and the ones after will be dead by the time they are aboe to get the benefits THEY TOO deserve.
We did after all save them a bundle taking care of the vets THEY messed up and we were told "you can't be paid for care giver unless you AREN'T related!

I agree with VetWidow Fl.I am glad for the increase in SSIA, but would much more prefer that the Congress pass HR775 and S535 to eliminate the SBP/DIC offset. I think it is time we write and call our reps. in House and Congress. Let's just keep the pressure on...
Widows of the Korean and Vietnam war are not getting any junger and the jung widows of Dessert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan have jung children to raise in this economy.

I BELIEVE WE ARE NOT BEING GIVEN WHAT OUR HUSBANDS PLANNED AND SACRIFICED FOR. OUR FAMILIES HAVE BEEN DECIEVED. OUR HUSBANDS PAID PREMIUMS THINKING THEY WERE TALKING CARE OF THIER FAMILIES,NOW THEY WANT TO GIVE US A TOKEN PAYMENT.THIS IS AN INSULT TO MY HUSBAND AND MY FAMILY. WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR SOMETHING THAT IS NOT DESERVED. THE GOVERMENT TOOK OUR MONEY AND NOW RENEGS ON AN AGREEMENT TO FOLLOW THROUGH. DO YOU THINK WE ARE STUPID! NOBODY IS GETTING RICH HERE!
