I was actually discharged after four months of treatment by an Army psychiatrist. It was the first time I had ever even talked to a mental health doctor. He had diagnosed me with three disorders, given me medication, and then I was given a honorable discharge. But they said it was not a disability at the time. A little over a year later, I initated my claim for compensation. It took them a year to deny the claim. They said that there were no military medical paperwork on me whatsoever. It was like I had never been in the service. So I tracked down the doctor, and he submitted a letter stating my diagnosis and treatment dates. About this same time, I was in a hospital, getting electric shock treatments for the same illness I was diagnosed with in the military. Keep in mind now, I had never seen a psychiatrist or psychologist prior to the military and was given a clean bill of health upon enlistment. I have been on SSDI for the electric shock after effects. It's been 6 years since I started the appeal. It's been over a year since my congressman expedited the appeal based on financial hardship. I'm still waiting. The most current information I've received is that it's sitting at a VA rating specialist. The VA has been trying to say all along that the illness is pre-existing, but they have zero documents to prove this. They have a doctor's letter explicitly denying any pre-existing condition, in fact. This is how a legitimate claim is handled. Be warned.
