Grant was a gifted soldier and a lousy president. Generals make poor presidents.

Bravo Sierra!...
I suppose you forgot about Washington and Eisenhower...
Seemed to be two pretty good Presidents, at least IMHO!...

I've read Grant's memoirs. He, definitely, was a very brave, loyal, skilled, and dedicated general who had the interests of all americans in mind. The South respected Grant because of his gallant behavior towards his Southern opponents during the Civil War. His gallant behavior during the Mexican War, also, garnered the respect of the Mexican people. It is interesting to note that, although he opposed the Mexican war personally, he fought the same in a very courageous and skilled manner.
I have the greatest admiration and respect for General Grant and thank him for the great service that he performed for our country.

Andy Jackson and Zack Taylor were Generals that might not have been politically correct but they got the attention of anti-central government crowd. Both threaten armed conflict in disturbances, not bowing to compromise to the ridiculous Free and Slave agenda. Grant inherited a can of worms after the war and a contentious Congress that wanted to punish anything southern. In that respect he did a good job. I'm still reading on Shelby Foote narration of the war years. When Grant was promoted over the armies of the Potomac in had 147,000 men at his disposal. A thousand more than Ordinero in Iraq.
