I'm not sure if this is feasable, but the concept of a very small, separate self-powered generator to run the systems outside the engine compartment might be a very beneficial proposition, in that it would be possible to shut down the main engine of the vehicle, but have the small 'pony' engine running an 800 - 1,000 amp source which would run all commo (etc.) and keep the main batteries charged, as well as providing main-engine starting power in the event of failure of the batery in a combat zone. The pony engine should have manual-start capability. This might probably extend the range of patrols, as it could save fuel expended in long-term main-engine idling to provide for commo and outside power needs, when a much smaller pony engine could do the job... ??
It would also reduce the needed size and power requirements of the main engine generator.

Well, then all they need to do is look at the "aux" on the M-41A1...
I'm also sure that there are other vehicles that have been so equipped...

The latest edition of the never ending search for the ultimate combat vehicle. I don't think they will ever find the perfect balance of protection vs. weight, power vs. fuel efficiency, multi use vs. mission specific, capacity vs. size, etc. Bottom line is no one or two vehicles are going to meet all needs. The original jeep was probably the best all around vehicle with all of its limitations. The Humvee was probably the next best until it was expected to be an armored vehicle. Auxiliary power units are probably the quickest and easiest answer to the increased electrical needs.

Does that mean Chinese-manufactured Hummers will be in the works?

After those folk apply their fuel conservation technology to the beast.
