I commend POTUS 44 for backing both initiatives ... lifetime electronic medical records for those that serve ... and advance funding for the VA.

The article title is misleading, however. Neither has been "fulfilled". I fervently hope that both are carried to fruition and applaud the promise ... saving the curtain call for when the promises are carried out.

Not otisotis's fault ... that's a pure Rieckhoff headline ... cart before the horse. Typical.

Nonetheless, I applaud Obama for supporting both initiatives. Neither is original.

Still, the point is valid, a leading headline is a leading headline, is the only point that I was trying to make...

Ah, come on SUNLINER81, can't an Obama supporter get a thread lead in once in a while? Every thread starter from the Obamaphobes is politically motivated, wouldn't you say?

It is (mis)-leading in more ways than one. VA and military medical records are already largely electronic ... have been for some time. The real issues are transfer of military records to the VA, privacy issues, and system compatability.

This promise begs answers to several questions -

1) Will old paper records, particularly for VN and later vets, be transferred to an electronic data base or will electronic records only benefit those that have served since military records went electronic?

2) Will vets be able to get a paper copy (or electronic copy on CD) of their complete medical record when they separate?

3) Who will have access to a vet's medical records without the vet's permission?

This action might be well intended, but what does it do for all the Vets who have been out for some time and still having problems?

"Obama Fulfills Two Promises to Vets"

Thruth is, only the supposed approval has been made. This administration has a habit of changing mid stream for most of its commitments. When the Action Has Been Completed, then and only then, will the Promises be fulfilled.

I'm most worried about the VA being able to do this without screwing it up.

Oh, and if you're a veteran and don't have a paper copy of every important document you ever earned while in the military, shame on you!

Obama fulfill any promise. Those were already in the works under Bush.

Just love it when a loser takes credit for someones else's work.

Had that done to me once at work when my boss call me in the office and said Dennis, so and so just turn in a report for the project you are working on, she is trying to steal your work, what do you want to do about it?

I said hey your the boss, you take the action, don't ask me, but as far as she goes, thats okay, now tell her to do it...I'm the only one tht can...

Obama has already time and time again taken credit for his staffs work, Obama himself has been way to busy out giving speeches to even write one word.

Sooner or later, his staff will get tired of it, then the leaks start..mark my words..

Oh come on, dman, how disingenuous can you possibly be? EVERY President takes credit for work done primarily by his staff. That's why he has a Cabinet, for God's sake. Did you see either of the Bushes, or Clinton, or Reagan out doing the donkey work of diplomacy or commerce? No - the Secretaries of State and Commerce and THEIR staffers did it.

Much of the electronic records problem lies with the military side, not the VA side. The VA system (VISTA) is far superior to the military system (AHLTA). In fact, a recent survey of military healthcare providers identified having to work with AHLTA as one of the top three reasons why they were leaving the military. If that's not incentive to improve, I don't know what is. I have to work with that baztard system every day, and I absolutely hate it - it's the most user UNfriendly system in existence to day, hands down.

I see a difference from prior administrations (note plural - not singling any one out) this way: previous Presidents have paid plenty of lip service in flowery speeches or State of the Union addresses but failed to back up the promises with funding, words or personal emphasis and attention. I see Obama doing all three, so that gives me cause for a higher level of optimism.

The proof will be in the results down the line, of course. We'll see.

From my personal experience in helping disabled vets: ALWAYS keep copies of ALL your records, and NEVER give originals to ANYONE (if you have them). It is astonishing how much just gets "lost".

Regardless of whether electronic or otherwise.

The electronic medical record will mean
BUMKIS if the medical care is NOT improved.

Remember the recent incident on the contaminated cancer tests.

I will call it improved if it is.

Promises mean NOTHING if not acted on.

And the proof will be in the FULFILLMENT of the 2 promises to the vets.

Time will tell.
