Looking at those charts Its no wonder why our military is undersized and overfunded to the point we cant afford a formidable military and thus have to keep troops in combat zones longer than necessary.

Once you include bonuses enlistment,
re-enlistment,combat pay, flight pay, 20 year retirerments etc it becomes unaffordable . Not implying that they dont deserve it its a matter of economics.

Military service a necessary evil was never intended to be a job and was meant to be shared by all in defense of our country at a cost that was sustainable. It's a sacrafice and duty and no one should be exempt.

Today however thats not the case so I would suggest instead of pay raises and large Bonuses
Reductions in taxes based on years of service.
Say 5% per year of honorable service. After 20 years they would be tax free which is no small thing and would be spread out over time making it more sustainable.

Thats what some States did in the fifties but the fed never picked up on it. The reduction was for housing taxes 10 years at a higher rate, or lifetime at a lower rate.

But to continue at the rate were going it will be unsustainable if were were to have to raise a large military for any extended period.

Congress raised the military pay over the President's recommendation just like they did last year.

In 2000 Congress and President Clinton passed a bill that mandated military pay raises would be .5% higher than the ECI. That provision expired after FY 2006, since then the President's budget has pushed for military pay raises at the ECI limit. It has been the Congress that has advocated for larger raises.

I have always felt that each and every military personnel should get the same percentage raise plus 10% that Congress votes for themselves.
After all, they do a whole lot more for the country than Congress does.

Much needed, well deserved, and long overdue. Our military (especially the enlisted) are the most underpaid solders in the world when compared to other major nations. They are tasked to unselfishly do more with less enduring hardships and repeated deployments which impact the solder, his home and family. Any added financial gain they can receive will go a long way to ensure we hire and keep the finest in uniform. Cool Wink

Yepper ... 3.9% ... vice 5.8% COLA for retirees and Social Security recipients. Such a deal ...

One of these years perhaps Congress will do the right thing and tie annual military pay raises to COLA. It would be nice if they achieved parity with civilian pay before doing so however.

Must be nice when the rest of the country can't even afford the taxes to pay for their raise.

Breaking faith with veterans and retirees...good idea? Some of us are still quite capable of pulling a trigger. Angry Whip

So what do you think?

Should the military get a raise, or be paid what they're worth?

well,
3.9% for the military
4.7% for congress (with a single digit approval rating)
and 5.8% COLA for retirees and Social Security recipients

Granted that the Military Retire's are getting a catch up after being shorted for years,

It is Social Security and the other social entitlement programs that are eating up over 50% of the budget.

I believe Federal judges got - NOTHING.

As for the do-nothing congress, they should be capped at the LOWEST federal pay raise / COLA that goes into effect.

OBTW,

I have been expecting for quite some time now for someone to point out to me what is different about the Avatar I chose to use.

Need to look close, since I can't seem to post a Hi-Rez picture on my personal page or Unit Page.

Hint: That is a Right Side Shoulder Insignia.

Not sure I understand your question. Are you implying the military is overpaid?

Any soldier that goes out and lays his life on the line for any civvie to live free and on the high life, that civvie owes half his pay monthly to that soldier....IMOHO.

The irony in the COLA is that it is based on Jul-Aug-Sep CPI-W ... purely a mathematical formula. July's took a big jump - fuel prices. Aug and Sep were lower than Jul ... and Oct really dropped. SS recipients and retirees got an undeserved raise (this year) simply because the formulation happened to key on the three highest months before fuel prices dropped through the floor.
