The Navy should really look into how they are alloctaing their money abroad, especially in these times with the economy in such a sad state. It should be up to the individual servicemembers to weigh the pros and cons of foreign on-base housing. Pro's is a safe microcosm where your family will probably know most of their neighbors but still have the freedom of leaving and exploring the surroundings at any time. To the contrary, having servicemember's families concentrated into one area gives the slime of this world a dastardy target. So why pay upfront for something which is not certain?

For future reference, this is the 'In the News' forum, so you need to post an article or a 'cold' link to an article for discussion. An opinion peice would go to 'Point-Counterpoint.' Anyway, welcome to mil.com.
I thank the navy personnal who are not married should at least live on base for at least the first year of servies. That would keep everything in check so the navy would not have to pay all of this money for nothing. and after the first year or so thay can discied if they want to stay or move off base. that way thay get a well rounded excperince. eather way thay still can see everything thay still have liberty.
