$4000 is not a lot for a Capt to stay unless it is addition to another $40,000 to reup and some guarantee of Major in a short period of time. And all cash up front, not like we Nam vets over the period of reupping. |

$4,000 bucks to keep a Captain in the Marine Corps? I know a Marine Captain would never consider it, but they should spit in the face of the officer who makes him that ludicrous offer!
I saw Navy enlisted men in non-critical rates get $12,000+ for re-enlisting another 4 years twenty five years ago! |

Maybe the Marine Commanders could save their Captains if it were not for the USFSPA law. Who in their right mind would want to stay in the marines when being faced with loosing 50% of their earned military retired /retainer pay being garnished and sent to their former (often remarried)spouse for life, as a marital property asset? While they await recall to active duty.It has been estimated that over 300,000 thousand career military members who were divorce and been transferred into the retired reserves have been placed in Involuntary Servitude to their former spouse for life. It's time for the Department of Defense to inform Congress to repeal the USFSPA law. CMSgt L.P.

Four grand? things being the way they are now, thats not a whole lot of money. Is that the Marines way of saying we don't want you around any more? that's the impression I would get.

Good luck with retaining good officers under the Obama administration. Once in office Obama will take half the bonus to give to those to uninterested in wearing the uniform.
Retention will not be a problem with Pres Obama. After cutting DoD budget to pay for "spreading the wealth", there will be no need to retain at least a quarter of those serving now. |

The army started seeing Officer Retention issues back in 2003.
As I remember it Fort Carson did a review of USAR Officers signign up for Vol Indef. For a USAR Officer to convert over to Vol Indef status and stay on past their initial MSO, that paper had to be submitted by the officer. They were happy that only of 1/3 of the CPTs sent Vol Indef paperwork had returned is saying NO. They felt that they were doing with with only a 1/3 rejection rate by the officers in question. The briefing went on to say that 1/3 of the CPTs did not even send a response back. DUH! That really means that 2/3 of the CPTs coming up for Vol Indef status were rejecting it (minus a few that may have submitted the paperwork as an LT. |

Oh,
(this is all from memory, I have the briefing somewhere) The other thing that indicated that the Retention Rates were dropping was the fact that the Officer Selection Rates were climbing. Pre-9/11 selection rates vs 2003 for Active Duty types were: to MAJ 80-90% to 95-99% to LTC 70-85% to 90-95% |
