Going from insurgency to social services. Sounds like a reorganized version of Hamas does it not?

Obligatory sarcasm aside, this development is very good. It sends message out to other fringe groups that even the might Mahdi Army seeks peace and normalization.
Whether that's true or not remains to be seen, but this is a 180 from their previous "kill Americans" stance.
Between the "Anbar Awakening" and this, Iraqis are starting to realize that they actually CAN influence their own futures. Something they had lost all hope of under decades of Saddam's brutal dictatorship.

25 million human beings able to determine their own form of governance! Isn't THAT what freedom and democracy are all about. Isn't that a CORE American value?
And so many say that this war has been a waste.

Maybe some people are starting to realize that perpetual war and violence is no way to live. One can only hope.

Can't think of anyone (at least in this country) that has any use for the SOB, but I don't think fueling another uprising is a real good idea at the moment.

Are you referring to the Stokely that changed his name to Kwame Ture shortly after he was the Honorary Minister for the Black Panthers? ?

The same Stokely Carmichael that condemned the Panthers for not being separatist enough and their "dogmatic party line favoring alliances with white radicals".

Immediately a red flag comes up when these militants call for cease fires. What we need to do is increase our intelligence collection efforts focusing on the validity of Sadr's change of heart. We should step up the offense and patrols. We need credible information from highly placed informants within his organization which, based on his claims, should now be easier for us because they are focusing on disarmament and social programs as opposed to ambushes, IEDs VBIEDs, EFPs, and suicide attacks. I see this as an opportunity for further exploitation of the enemy. Just because he says, "I'm tired of killing Americans, I wanna be a peaceful muslim now", does not mean all of his crimes get wiped under the rug. It does mean that his voluntarily becoming a soft target means it should be easier to find all of his assets before we go in and cease them all and cut the head of of this snake so it doesn't come back again in 10 years.

Sure, We agree to begin peace talks and negotiations, but we never stop collecting information for our commanders to eventually act on. Once a war criminal always a war criminal.

Remember, we win wars by keeping our friends close and our enemies even closer.

The fact that he thought the Black Panthers were sell out because they chose to ally themselves with radical whites on Civil rights says it all.

This man is a criminal who is all but responsible for the deaths of over 4000 American GI's. Now of course, the money he will need to start his Social Service agencies will undoubtedly come from the American taxpayer, so in other words, he is being rewarded by the US government for killing their Sons and Daughters. Wow, what a great deal. Sounds to me this guy al Sadr WON the Iraq war, not the USA.

What? No libs weighing in on this one? Why is that not a surprise? Perhaps for once they are totally flabbergasted and dumbfounded! No way that "the surge" and other tactical advantages might have lead to this. I challenge you libs to come forward and tell us why this strategy worked in the face of all the adversity! I wait.
