Gee, what happened to the retentention/expense arguement from Graham,McConnell,McCain, etal? While everybody is "High Fiving" over the what should be called, the in spite of rightwing rhetoric GI Bill, I believe its important to remember the administration flaks and toadies who fought against it. Thank you, Paul Rieckhoff, for this article, your service to the Nation and it's newest Veterans.

What a miserable boondoggle and swindle has been perpetrated on the American public!

First, today's military is being paid more money and given more benefits than any others who served their nation in the past.

Now, they are given far more benefits than any enjoyed by those who have gone before them since 1945. In the past, the Bill provided assistance. Now, it is giving a totally free ride.

There is the great sympathy for the GI who is prepared to die in the Middle East. Well, what a bunch of bovine feces, people, 90% of those in today's military are never close enough to war to hear even a BB gun go off. No, they are sitting on their derriere in some recruiting office, in Washington, on a ship in the Med, or an AFB in Kansas.

How about making this benefit for those who have actually in combat, not just a member of one big club.

So, our politicians greedy for votes have given away the store to yet another group of Americans who believe they are "entitled" to one thing or another.

The new GI bill is very generous; I just don’t know where all that money is going to come from.....

Also, retention is going to drop like a rock next year.....

What an incredible crock of horsesheit! In the Oregon National Guard alone, over 10,000 individual mobilization orders have been cut since 9/11. We have “weekend warriors” who are truly hardened combat veterans with 3 and 4 deployments under their belts. Where in the name of God did you come up with 90% never close to war? Over 60% of all combat forces in the United States military are made up of the National Guard and Reserves. Do the math. It’s a very small percentage of our forces that stay safely out to sea. Most have been chewing sand for years now.

Since the Iraqi's seem to feel they can take over now, maybe we could save about $1.2 billion per month there, you think?

You can’t save what you don’t have. Iraq war, so far has been mainly on “I owe you”. Wink

I'm glad they have made improvements, but this is A LOT of money compared to my GI Bill. I got a whopping 300 per month as a full time student and in calculating further financial aid it was not considered income although I was not working... it was considered as funds 100% available for tuition. So, if I had made only 3600 in a year I would have qualified for grant money, but if I had 3600 for college I did not qualify. I paid for a 1/12 portion of my benefits and then had it count against me. So this is a very generous plan. I wish it had come after desert storm.

And thank you to the all the veterans who took the time to call/write their reps and did not receive one cent of compensation for their time...all the members of the VFW, American Legion, Student Veterans of America, AMVETS and any other veteran organization that I did not mention(feel free to add them)

It was the collective voice of many veterans in every voting district that made this happen.

I am currently serving in OEF and I just hit my four year mark in the Air Force and this is THE BEST NEWS I HAVE EVER RECEIVED!!!! Paul you are the best. I am leaving active duty next year and attending college full time, and the passing of this bill has taken any concern I had away!! I will continue to serve as a national guardsmen until completeing college after which I intend on commissioning.

Thank you to everyone that made this possible, and thank God for FDR!!!

Wow, I'm not sure what world Mr. Evans is living in or where he gets his "statistics". I live in Manhattan, KS, very near to Ft. Riley (Army Post and home of the Big Red One). I know a LOT of active duty, reservist, and national guard members (Army, Air Force, Marines, friends, neighbors, family members) and I can only think of two who haven't been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan at least once (mostly 2 or 3 times). The two I know who haven't been there, have been to the Far East instead. The vast majority have been eating sand for up to 13 months at a time for the last 5 years. The ones who have only been deployed overseas once have been pulling constant extra duty to keep things running on the home front.

Ah, I see, Evans. Since only about 10% of our total military personnel are on the ground in Iraq at the present moment, the other 90% are obviously sitting on their dufusses. Rrriiiight.
