SWEEEETTTTTT!!! I can't wait to sit at MPF for 2 hours for an updated card, just for them to tell me their system is down and I will have to come back later.
Why must the services (DoD) do things the hard way? Once upon a time…some of us were given a “Serial Number” and life was grand. No worry about ID theft and the problems that have occurred as a result of their brain fart to use the SSN. Now many of us share our SSN’s with 1/3 of Mexico and wait for the other 2/3 to catch up. I can only assume that the DoD has worked something out with the Mexican Consulate to ensure this action will not impact the Consulates efforts to smuggle as many of their citizens into the USA. This action by the DoD is about 20 years late and compares to closing the barn door after the cows have gotten out. It is actions like this that scares the living daylights out of me. Where do they keep these decision makers or better…where do they get them?
Not only is this change about 20 years late, which would go back to 1988, but more like 40 years late, which would go back to 1968, when the decision to use SSNs was first made. I can still remember my old Air Force serial number, which, in itself, is just short of a miracle
For 12927140... If you are like me, just remembering you were in the A/F much less our service number is somethng to marvel about. When did you enter the A/F? Boot camp in Amarillo Tx??
Thank goodness the Military is doing this. Now when everyone wants to verify your SSN they will ask you for your first 5 numbers instead of your last 4.
The old service number for enlisted people and file numbers for officers worked great until the transfer to SSN's. They should go back to that system for ID cards with no SSN information shown.

Yeah, but will they ever figure it out?... Respectfully, SUNLINER81
Ever asked a medic/corpsman to get your medical record by your last name? They use last 4,name,DOB etc. DEERS,CHCS and SSN will not be scraped for service numbers. The microchip in your enciphered ID card will still have your vital records. SSN will not be printed on the card. I'm sure the eggheads are not trying to reinvent the wheel. This is the 21st century.

Yes, but having access to your social on so many records is just asking to compromise service personnel, financially, which could lead to security being compromised. Going back to service numbers is not reinventing the wheel, it's rediscovering it, that's a big difference... Respectfully, SUNLINER81
