I've seen several people "ride" the system until it was time to deploy then claim a disability and not go. If they can no longer perform the duties required of them, then put them out of the military with no chance of re-enlistment. It's that simple. It's hard for me to believe that someone has had health issues severe enough to keep them from deploying and never know about them. I'm service connected and could keep from a deployment, but I love being in service and want to stay as long as possible. If you can't do it anymore, I'm sorry but you need to go.
Things must have changed since I was a pencil pusher. Information of this sort being distributed was a guarantee of being exited and busted. The story quotes newspaper sources of un-named references. The only time it name names is when the explanation the illness was not disclosed so it could be a hang nail to cardiac arrest.
I agree with you both, Funny how even a cut can put you on the list of unfit for Duty. I know a guy that hurt his toe back in 65 before deployed To V.Nam, I am talking stubed and lost his toe nail. Never had to deploy and much to my amazment he collected $95.00 dollars a month for his injury. That PI$$ED me off when I found out. Needless to say X friend as of 66.
In the end IT IS THE COMMANDERS call that is what he takes the King's Shilling for! I would think that short of a serious respritory, ambulatory or pulminary issue ...get on the plane trooper! In the end the medic and doctor are recommenders and not deciders.
Hello! Here I am trying to get back in and having to do waivers for the same conditions I had during my first eight years (during Desert Storm). Our whole unit wanted to go but the Army would not deploy us because we were a drill sargent school. So, a unit full of 11B's had to sit on thier hands. If there are conditions that keep the soldiers from being deployed, are going to know. But, new recruits are being told the yes and no acronyms. "Your Enlistment Stops" and "Numerous Opportunities" If you are honest, you have to fight the system. unfortunately
Just coming home from a recent deployment I have witnessed first hand what they are writing about in this article. The article describes categories of issues and the number of cases involved. This has no bearing on whether or not they can perform their duties. For the most part they are performing just fine and you would never know there is an issue. What they need to write about are all of the fat bodies that are getting deployed and cannot pass a simple PFT let alone perform their duties satisfactorily.
Unfortunately, I have a cousin that pulled a stunt to get out of being deployed... DH got ahold of him and explained how horrible it was that he would not only do that to himself, but to his guys... he also mentioned how there are those that truly can't go that want to (DH being one of them). Hopefully these commanders are weeding out the fakers from those that truly can't go.
i dont understand this one bit.....the way to determine if someone is unfit relies on medical forms being filled out only, correct? if yes why didnt these people take the proper steps? laziness?? i mean i just dont understand if someone is UNFIT why the still are being deployed....thats really not fair to the military branch to send people who are unfit in my opinion...can someone enlighten me on this procedure and why 43,000 some people who were unfit were deployed?

Easy. They are abusing the system. Just like all the vets that claim a disability to get extra benefits. There are plenty of abusers out there and people wonder why the VA is bogged down.

LOL. I remember when my late dad told me he was diagnosed with 'flat feet' at the start of WWII. So they made him a medic, and assigned him to an Infantry unit serving in Africa and Europe. I know...different time, different war. Still, he saw the humor in it once he was home again.
I took alot of crap for my injured ankle in 2003. So I don't agree with all this slacker talk! In 2002, I broke my foot and left leg at the joint assiting on a K9 search for burglars on base. The wonderful Army hospital emergency room didn't see the break on the x-ray until a second set was done 10 days later. I was put in a walking cast for 2 months, never given any physical therapy. My unit showed their appriciation by shoving me in the arms room in the basement all day, unless they needed me to watch someone pee! A year and a half later we were deployed again to go to Iraq. During our train up the leg started bothering me again. The docs flagged me as non-deployable because the bones weren't lining up, but the unit sent me anyway because I was "already on the manifest"! I spent two months in Kuwait, limping around, with nothing to do because with all my gear on, I'd just fall over! I refused to go foreward with the unit in spite of constant badgering because I didn't want anyone to die because I couldn't keep up! I was sent back stateside to be treated like **** for the rest of the year because I was national guard and a broke dick! I finally had to see a sports injury doc on my civillian insurance to fix what the Army was responsible for! I'm now happily driving my patrol car around a huge county handling all types of calls by my lonesome. So much for being lazy and cowardly! Oh, and I'm now in the Air National Guard! FTA!!!

Just a suggestion, GruntMP: Put together a profile for all to see.
that is 1 thing i don't miss about the army is all the hazeing. yah say stuff to the person that dosn't want to go put him down more give him the depression he needs to get money from the va. instead of puting the person down try to lift him incourage him and to help him.just because u can run 2 miles in 12 mintues. and another person can't pass it doesn't mean that person wouldn't cover ur back. most of u people need to rethink what u say. and yes i go to the va i'm an iraq vet and i got problems and i deal with them by people encourgeing me helping me. not by people calling me a sand bagger, or a broke dick.
Is it really surprising that there are so many unfit menmbers going to war. Isn't our military today the kinder, gentler military. Back in the day you went if your number was called. No exceptions except the ones who went to Canada. We weren't coddled as they are today. To avoid such a mess. maybe they should address the "DRAFT" once more. With more bodies to pick from this war will finally have enough personnel without draining the few are are in it to do the job.
