That was a well though out and reasonable Op-Ed. I certainly was NOT a POW with them but I do disagree with some of the things stated. I will be voting for Sen. McCain, not because he was a POW or a hero. He was certainly both, as were all of those brave men and women in Viet Nam. I am voting for him because I like his policies better that ANY of the candidates that were/are running.

I voted for him in 2000 and I'll continue to vote for him as long as he is running for office.

This pretty well explains the author, IMHO.

quote:
He is now a peace and justice activist with Veterans for Peace.

From the article (said about McCain):

quote:
He is not a moderate Republican. On some issues he is a maverick. But his voting record is far to the right.

Many would take exception to that ... and, if that is a disqualifier, what does that do to Senator Clinton and Senator Obama ... arguably "far to the left"? The author wasn't going to vote for a conservative Republican any way you slice it.

Seems to me the bulk of the article is personal justification of how the author is more of a POW than McCain because he and others went through many of the same things but ... were there longer. A bit churlish in my opinion.

I appreciate your good comments about John McCain, but disagree with your choice. I am a retired Chief Petty Officer who served two cruises aboard the USS Ticonderoga CVA-14. I am very proud of John McCain and his opinions on issues, and will be voting for him in the upcoming elections.

I have little doubt that McCain is the best we have to choose from.. and the little doubt I do have stems from not having any idea WHO Barrack Obama really is.. I know more about his preacher.. and if THAT guy is Wright, I'd wrather be wwrong....

I'm a bit confused.

From the same paragraph...

quote:
Senator John Sidney McCain, III is a remarkable man who has made enormous personal achievements. And he is a man that I am proud to call a fellow POW who "Returned With Honor." That's our POW motto. But since many of you keep asking what I think of him, I've decided to write it out. In short, I think John Sidney McCain, III is a good man, but not someone I will vote for in the upcoming election to be our President of the United States.

Am I missing something, or is he just attempting to differentiate the "man" from the "senator"?

Confused

If I remember right, in 2000 McCain earned the interesting distinction of being the Republican Democrats would be most willing to vote for per news polls. His capitulation to the Bush/Cheney/Rove leadership of the GOP might have won him points in the GOP but lost him a lot of independent support. McCain is currently no "maverick." He now has "GOP" clearly branded on his hindquarters. There's nothing wrong with that. Just don't pretend to be a "maverick" when you're not. Kudos to McCain for his comeback and presumptive winning of the nomination. To the author of this article, thank you for your service, both military and civilian. It is no surprise you continue to serve your country with integrity.

I have a hard time figuring out the author's argument. A lot of it seems to be that John McCain somehow has stolen the spotlight from the hundreds of other Vietnam POW's. This strikes me as very strange.

He also criticises McCain for being too conservative, which is hilarious since so many conservatives consider him a closet liberal. His argument about "a bad temper" is totally ridiculous. I'm willing to bet that a number of Presidents have had poor tempers and worse mental problems. That argument seem to me like the one about how women can't become President because they are untrustworthy a week out of every month.

I think you are correct, godawgz, and I will be voting for Mac as well. However, I must confess to having to hold my nose and carry a barf bag into the voting booth ever since Gerald Ford ran against Jimmy Boy. Been searching in vain for a REAL conservative since Ronnie left!

Oh wow! Inflation is out of control, jobs are racing out of the country. The freakin bridges are falling down.

Do you people seriously think another 4 years of the sameo sameo is going to sell?

McCain was different in 2000. Now he is just Bush heavy. Stay the course. No regulation. Applaud the corporation when it makes a profit with its foot on the face of the people and bail them out with tax money if they turn out to be crooks or conmen and loose their aholes.

Come on. Give me the list of great things Republicans, they are not conservatives, have done with their 7+ years of power.

It's March and the election is in November. That's OK though, you already made up your mind. Don't waste your time researching the candidates.

I've gotta say, I'm a Contract or Gingrich conservative.. I can't put into words how disappointed I was with the 'pubs in control of the house, senate, and presidency.. I thought all of the Contract w/ America planks that died when the pubs only had the House would be resurrected, particularly the line-item veto..but democrat? out of the question.. all the decent dems have either turned 'pub or Independent.. so what's left?

Pretty easy - one. Stem cell research.

He's vetoed 8 since.

2) H.R. 1591, U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Care, Katrina Recovery, and Iraq Accountability Appropriations Act, 2007 (subsequently approved as HR 2206 with some aspects of the initial bill dropped)

3) S. 5, Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007 (Second try, same result)

4) H.R. 976, Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007 ("SCHIP"). Override attempt failed in House, 273-156 (286 votes needed)

5) H.R. 1495, Water Resources Development Act of 2007 (Overridden by House, 361-54 (277 votes needed). Overridden by Senate, 79-14 (62 needed), and enacted as Pub.L. 110-114 over President's veto)

6) H.R. 3043, Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2008 (Override attempt failed in House, 277-141 (279 votes needed))

7) H.R. 3963, Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007[18] (Override attempt failed in House, 260-152 (275 votes needed))(Second try, same result)

8) H.R. 1585, National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008 (Pocket Veto)

9) H.R. 2082, Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008 (Override attempt failed in House, 225-188)

Now how many did President Clinton veto while his party held the House and Senate (1992-1994)?

Wink

the answer to your question is because your an idiot who is another anti-war(american safety) believer....why wouldnt you vote for mccain..he's by far the best candidate for the presidency....he has vowed to fix the housing market problem which has been terrible the past few years.....and he will strengthen policy with this war get those terrorists out of iraq and take down any terrorism operations that are happening in the world, and he will be legendary....i like bush b/c he has balls to do what is necessary and funny thing is people think he's stupid...he's the PRESIDENT obviously he knows what he's doing....his father was president so he knows what to expect...i think he has done and good job and mccain will pick up right where he left off and finally end this war...dont get me wrong i am against war unless its necessary, and in this case it is crucial to our safety as americans, there is no other way around it.....
