Just what the French NAVY needs, a bunch of out of shape Cyber Boys, who's biggest fight related injury is a small blister on their Joy stick finger....Napoleon is rolling in his grave.

And Americans, on the other hand, have never done it - not once.

Not true while many think the whole idea to recruit by video game is bull crap I think its a smart and well plan and thought idea. Think about it a lot of people play videos games to pass time. The military is using this idea to strike a interest in there mind but at the same time giving them entertainment.Remember most servicemen who just join grew up playing the saga and play station or x box and ps2 and pc.

The problem, Sunliner81, is that however they are recruited, they are still French, and are therefore useless in battle. Highlander09 mentioned Napoleon, the last Frenchman to record a military success. For that distinctly un-French behavior, he was banished!

People like to be proud and train so they can take pride in what they do. I suspect it was a case of being out numbered or being taken off guard. All military personnel train to defend against invaders, some win and some pay with their lives. Question, which one do you think is a coward?

To get back to the story. Virtual recruiting is a good idea because the world we live in is more virtual. I enjoy video games but have also been known to visit the gym, not a fat boy.

One of the last to record a French military success was Petain (Verdun). In spite of that he was exiled.

Napoleon was (ultimately) exiled after his defeat at Waterloo. Before that was Elba, a blip in his career, after another defeat at Leipzig.

Shows ta go ya that winning battles, and winning a war, are entirely different ocelots.

While there may yet be a need for deck swabbies and paint scrapers, the hi-tech navy of to-day needs some different skills than were wanted by a press-gang.

Powder-monkeys, or even ammunition handlers are far rarer on board than in days past - an engineer knowledgeable on automated loading systems might well replace a magazine crew, the gun servers are long-gone on most modern vessals. A simulator 'ace' might replace the whole 'black gang'.

Appealing to the 'technorati' is a no-brainer. Much like the Army's shoot-em-up sampler to entice teens, or Marines cruising the Malls, you look for what you need where they hang out.

Out of shape doesn't matter - an Exocet hit pretty well negates the need of being able to swim a couple of K.
