I am with you on this one! I hate traveling...from hotel rooms to public restooms, I am a freak! I don't know what I'm going to do when I have kids someday....
Well, unless you live in a SEALED BUBBLE, every person encounters germs, sneeze-spray, residues, and dead skin cells that have been sloughed off of everyone walking by. We live in a dirty world, we share germs, and we can only take the most rudimentary precautions in our normal activities to avoid cross-contamination. That's why the vast majority of us have this wonderful thing known as the immune system.
So, unless a person only lives in his or her own house, with the windows sealed with duct tape and the ventilation system equipped with redundant HEPA filters, then worrying about the hotel room is futile.
Sure, check to make sure the hotel room isn't nasty. Pull back the sheets and make sure they're clean. Look in the bathroom to make sure it's been wiped down. Bring your own pillow (I do, but only because I really like my own contour pillow - it's comfortable). If you're really paranoid, bring some Lysol spray. But really, unless you want to live in a bubble, accept the fact that life is messy, so you might as well enjoy it.

There is another horror in hotel rooms .... bedbugs. Especially when they hitch a ride home with you.

Travel with a blacklight to avoid spackling residue.
