It's about time I've read some intelligent thoughts on the Op-Ed section! I wish he would tell us what he would do to counter Russia's strength in the region in relation to fuel.
Russia is upset because we can protect ourselves and our allies from enemy missles!?! Last I checked there was only one reason to get upset over a missle defense system.
If russia's chuffed at Europe i.e. Slovakia and Poland, they chosen an odd way to demonstrate it by punishing Bulgaria and Serbia. South eastern europe is affected and bothe the missile defense 'targets' are nowhere near,and apparently, warm and toasty. So much for the Chiken Little interpretation of the big., bad bear skeer.
If on the other hand russia is chuffed with the Ukraine - for it's 'support'of gallant li'l georgia last summer, and its unpaid gas bill cutting off the gas in the middle of winter begins to make some sense. The ukrainians have been siphoning free gas friom the wuropean supply for years. Do the need it/ No.
they've got all that Donbass coal they're now using for heat instead. But like every other opportunist if you can get something for nothing, why not?
The sooner the Europeans help Russia find a better way to get the gas out the sooner the supply will resume. I think the Russians have had it with the Ukraine.
The dependence on Russian fuel is a concern from a security viewpoint. But no more so is dependiong on Iraq, Nigeria, Venezuela or Mexico.
