Good stuff. Lind has a way of making folks think as evidenced by the responses he's referenced here. He brings up something disturbing but true, the longing by some for the security of paternalistic government, be it royal or elitist or dictatorial or oligarchic. We witnessed eight years of oligarchic governance under Bush/Cheney with the coalition of neoconservatives and religious conservatives. Machiavelli would have applauded the consolidation of power in The Executive, the extraordinary pseudo-legal writings of Mr. Yoo and Mr. Addington, the exploitation of the loopholes in international laws and treaties to create Guantanamo, etc. I'll take the post WW2 world over the pre-WW1 world hands down.
