There was a time in America when people looked up to those who would be considered heroic, despite their protestations to the definition being used to describe themselves. Sadly, it is difficult to find such people deserving of the title of hero and their actions heroic in this day and age. Today we are pelted with stories of people deserving little attention but their titillating lives draw a majority like a moth to a flame, their lives mostly filled with waste, self-abuse, egotism, narccisism...I really cannot think of any society idols and icons one could classify as a hero with heroic actions as part of their resume? Maybe there are a few but, at the moment I cannot think of one. Trash sells, people eat it up. One need only look at the publications available at a check-out counter at a supermarket...mindless gossip, a waste of paper and ink...ditto on television and cable.
I do not see the situation changing. How can it when our children do not receive an education that truly outlines and educates them what a hero is and what an heroic action is! I would love to ask a class of hign school students if they could name a few true heros and their heroic action associated with their names.
So, legacy, its importance has been lost for the most part on people who could not care less.

Agree. Our society has lost the true meaning of hero......although I know they are out there. This situation parallels the loss of Statesmen and National leaders. We have thousands of politicians, but I cannot think of a single Statesmen.
