any recruiters around?
Letting a few more GED recruits ... true, some will be lemons ... but many will be outstanding soldiers. So, a good idea.

I didn't even have a GED when I went in the Army. Had a GT of 128 though. Big Grin

Didn't get my GED until about 6 months before I got out.

It sounds like a good plan. But maybe the military needs to also take a good look at their prior service soldiers, who are coming back or wanting to come back in service to aid is this fight! Being prior service myself and currently in the reserves, I've seen things that disappoint me greatly about how our prior service people and reservist are treated. I have served a tour in Iraq recently (Reserves) and proud to have done my part. But when I came home and seen that not much has changed for reservist when it comes to equipment, treatment and even bonuses, it makes me mad, not to mention it makes me want to give my boots up for good when my times up. As reservist, we can go into any combat zone as active duty soldiers and could die just as well as them. But when we are back at our regular units and drilling, we get insufficient or outdated equipment, we get insufficient money or seats for schools and training in alot of cases. We are basically last in almost everything when it comes to being a soldier. How is this fair. I do believe that we need to beef our military back up and I stand behind that 100%. But someone needs to take a good look at keeping our reserves soldiers wanting to re-enlist as well and stop looking at us like we are beneath active duty soldiers. Now, I cant and wont point any fingers, but those of you who do it or have done it, know exactly who you are! Put yourselves in our shoes!

I started out with high school and some college in '65 and 20 years later, it was still the best thing that happend to me. Nowdays, people are waiting in line to get into the military, some smarter than others and the motivation probably revolves around getting a job and the money vrs love of country, b/c most today have no clue about love of country and sure have no experience in the military sect. They'll learn what it means to love your country, though some never will and they'll sure learn what the military is about. In my 20 years of military service I've met some of the best people this country had to offer. So, in these times, we have to lower our standards. In the 60's you didn't have to have a high school diploma except in the AF. That didn't make us any better, just that the AF had a handle on what they had coming into the AF. The standards to get in aren't that bad as some see it, but we sure need the people. It's either that, or bring back the draft b/c that's what it will come down to. Popcorn

Same here. Recieved my GED in AIT with a GT of 146. Didn't drop out of school because I was dumb but because of family life. Now with a military pension and college under my belt it proves, GED does not stand for General Education DEffiency. Wink

I think the underlying reason the military is fussy about GEDs, etc is to be fair to people who took the time to finish high school.

What incentive would anybody have to finish high school, if they can drop out, study, study, study for the ASVAB until they could finally have the highest score possible, and be the first to get the best positions?

How would you like it if you graduated from high school, and there was nothing left except the jobs you did not have in mind doing, because all the jobs you wanted got filled up by some people you knew dropped out of school and wasted no time preparing for the ASVAB?

I took my GT test when I first enlisted without a diploma or GED. I was way more intelligent than my HS classmates. If I wanted a HS diploma like they recieved one year later, all I have to do is go to my courthouse, take the US and State constitution test and I'd have what they got. I have the time, they don't, they are still working their arses off waiting for Social Security. But I understand the thinking of most HS grads....those that drop out are undesirables. Roll Eyes

I wasn't around four years ago and I'm glad I have the opportunity to give my 2 cents worth since the subject does, somewhat, include what was once my situation.

I'm a high school drop out myself, after failing the High School Proficiency test.

I dropped out because I too wanted to take the most direct route into the real world.

But my circumstances were different. My high school peers were preparing for College/other advanced courses. In short, I took the most direct route to the real world because I wasn't going to learn anything that I couldn't learn in a GED prep class. Instead of waiting 2 years to get a HS diploma, I decided to drop out, and get a GED within 8 months. My courseload, unlike my HS peers, was so basic it didn't make scence to drag out in 2 years what I can do in 8 months because I was 18 and still in the 10th grade.

And more power to you SSW ... however given the title of the thread, it seems appropriate to point out that we are dealing with 4 year old fish ... and a thread that was already two years after the fact when it was started lest the usual suspects come in with their rants on how the Army continues to go to hell in a handbasket. With the economy in the tank ... and enlistments rising ... one can expect the bar to rise for recruits ... if it hasn't started up already.
